Sellout Streak

Did I miss the post where we discussed the fact that Notre Dame was set to lose theirs last weekend which should pretty much eliminate the chance that anybody will ever be able to overtake Nebraska? We have lost so many records over the past 20 years, it's pretty cool we won't lose that one.

I've heard varying numbers guessed on how many tickets are acquired by a few boosters to keep the streak going,  who give them away or have them sold on StubHub, etc.  Made me wonder about Moos's remark a short while back that hiring Scott Frost "preserved the sell-out streak for sure."

My guess is that a lot more are being divied out by those rich guys now than before.  I don't believe in the sellout as organic, as I used to many many years ago.

I went on Saturday and there were many open seats in the north and south stadiums.  I was shocked and bummed

I was there too and saw attendance at 88.9K.. How does that figure in. If they are actual attendance numbers to back up listed capacity I guess I still feel it is legit. I assume we are all playing by the same rules. ND boosters could prebuy tickets too.

 
Sold out does not mean full stadium. 
 

Also, most empty seats in the south stadium were the student section where they don’t sit in designated seats so they often crowd down lower leaving the tip open.

85,548 is capacity, so I would count it as "legit sold out," as long as attendance numbers exceeded that. I don't have time right now, but would be curious if we have ever failed to put at least 85,548 butts in the seats since the streak has been active. If we have not, I would say it is legit as they come.

The announced capacity includes everyone in the building - players, coaches, media, vendors, medical staff, etc.  That's how everyone does it.

Who gives a s#!t what other programs think?  It's a tribute to our fans and I'll take it

Technically they are all sold so they are sold out.  Now, if they want to quibble with *how* they are sold, that's a different question.

You can kind of watch the tickets get sold the last few years since everything is on Seat Yourself.  Most of them seem to be legitimately sold.  Now, perhaps there are people buying more that that ahead of time to get the number down.  But I don't think there has been a lot of that.  A few years ago they didn't announce the "sell out" until later so that's possible.  But they are generally all sold out well before the season starts.  One would think if there was a lot of scrambling to get them sold it would be closer to the first game - which did happen a year or two a few years back.

I guess the one caveat to all that would be the returned tickets from the visiting team.  I'm not really sure how those figure into the whole scheme of things.  I'm sure there have been times when there has been a rush to get those unloaded.

Capacity has changed a bit in recent years. It was upwards of 89k for a while in the beginning of this decade, but then they expanded seat sizes in north end zone and eliminated a few thousand seats. 

To answer your question, no, tickets sold hasn't been below capacity since the streak started in 1962.

Agreed. It's harder and harder to fill seats every year. It's way cheaper, and way easier to watch a game at home.

Memorial Stadium has a lot of things going against it, not least of which is the fact that there are no major roads coming into it, and parking is a nightmare.

This. Plus it seems to me that the LPD does a half-assed job with traffic flow. Maybe it’s not enough manpower allotted for games, but it’s an observation I’ve made the past 10 or so years.
