Matt Waldoch - Husker Kicker

Chris Heady from the OWH has been saying for weeks that Waldoch has the strongest leg of any of the kickers, and would see him make the longest FG's in pre-game warmups.  The biggest issue with Waldoch was him learning how to elevate the ball to get over the line, while still keeping the distance.  Waldoch himself mentioned that his earlier kicks were too flat and like a crossing pass in soccer, where the flight path of the ball is flatter.

I wish he would do a flip kick FG...Run up...do a hand spring flip and instead of throwing in the ball...kicking it!

 
Okay, I know we've suffered setbacks due to injuries this year.  But this year's kicking game as compared to the past couple of decades--woof!  Makes me wonder if the training/recruiting/coaching for kickers has fallen off a bit under Frost.   Time will tell I guess.

Waldoch is a bright spot in an otherwise mediocre year for us in the kicking game.  Hope to see him suit up for us next fall.

Frost inherited a true freshman kicker on scholarship in Pickering.  Pickering did well enough in 2018, where Frost didn't think he would need to bring in any more scholarship kickers, and did bring in a walk-on in Dylan Jorgensen.  I am not sure what else Frost and the coaching staff could have done.  I don't think any college program has a dedicated kicking coach, as almost all of D-1 kickers have had their own personal kicking coaches for years.  Football coaches can understand try to find areas of improvement if a kicker is struggling, but the training and coaching for kickers is outside of most coaches' expertise.

And, it's extremely rare that a team has their top two kickers go down to what basically has amounted to as season ending injuries.  

We are in unchartered territory with our kicking game this year.  So, sit back and find the excitement and humor in our situation and don't make too rash of judgements on the staff and team based on anything kicking this year.

Agree 100%  I thought it was incredible and almost funny how McCallum's immaculate FG defied the laws of science against Northwestern.  However, that same kick showed Frost that he needs to go with another option.  The last FG against Maryland was a great gesture by Frost for getting that kid from Lincoln in the NU history books.  Frost didn't need to do that, but that kid will be able to tell his grandkids, "I kicked a FG for the Nebraska football team", even if that 19 yard kick grows to 45 yards and it being a game-winner, instead of extending the lead to 47.

You forgot to add: "before NU was great, that kick uplifted the morale of the team and turned it around to win 5 Natties over the next 7 years".  :)   (we can dream, right?)

Would be nice next year if NU was able to have a dedicated kick off specialist and a separate guy for FGs to spread the wear/tear around.  Similar to Kunalic/Henery back in the late 00s.

"My kick propelled the team to a 63 game winning streak and 4 national championships, and Coach Frost always said my kick was the play which kick-started (pun intended) the Nebraska program's success under Coach Frost."

Definitely!  After the Wisconsin game, Heady questioned why Waldoch wasn't be used for kickoffs, and it must be due to him not kicking it high enough, which can produce a returnable kick if it doesn't go through the end zone.
