I sincerely appreciate that... Look, the only thing I am doing with this thread is getting the attention of the fans to prove a point. The point is, the coaches need to do something to get the attention of the players... even if it means threatening the boys with their starting jobs. I am not saying I am right, this is merely MY opinion. Having been to every single game since 1998, I think I have earned the right to speak loudly about the team and the direction it is taking. I dont think I am better than anybody, and at times I am sure I am off target... but when people dogpile you for saying what needs to be said, stand back because the fists will fly. :box
1998?

Isn't that the same year they outlawed throwing unruly fans over the back of the stadium? <_<
YES! Thank goodness for me! LOL!!
I just hope I'll be able to bring my sons to a game next time I get back home without having to wear Halloween Costumes (BOO!)

I am not trying to enter this debate anything, but it seems to me that jjamuss, you are contradicting yourself a little bit....... if this is America, and you are allowed to voice your opinion without getting "piled on", then how come Octo isn't "allowed" to voice his opinion without guys like you "piling on" him?

Maybe you would like to boo the team for "letting you down".....but guess what fans that "boo" are REALLY LETTING THE TEAM DOWN..... doesn't sound so good when you look at it from the other side.....

I am a coach, and a NU alumni, season ticket holder since 1990 and have been to almost every bowl game in over 15 years, so I know I deserve an opinion, and the people that boo should have their a$$ benched from coming to the games...talk about fair weather fans ???

Don't give me the $$$ issue....if you don't like the team, attitude, coaches, player comments, feel free to spend your "hard-earned" money elswhere...... this is not the NFL.... and unless you are directly paying a person for his/her services (boss-employee), the players owe you NOTHING !!!!
If you read this thread, I am the ONLY one who said he should be benched... read the facts before spouting bollocks! And now you are giving me the holier than thou routine with your 15 bowl games... wipe your a$$ with them!! We, as AMERICANS, reserve the right to speak freely... Steve chose to say what he said, and I chose my words. Seems I did a better job of getting people fired up than the coaches did!! And your comment about players not owing the fans anything is EXACTLY WHY THEY PLAYED LIKE SHEYIT!!! There is NO consequence for playing like a bozo... so maybe there should be!!

How do you think benching or dismissing one of the few defensive players who is doing alright (or at least better than most others) for an inappropriate comment after a disappointing game will send any message to the players other than, "You will be overly punished for even the smallest mistake! Now get the **** out of here!" How is that going to help the team?
So we should say, make as many mistakes as you want... just wipe your a$$ with the tradition? NO F'ing way! Play like a champion, every game or just stay in the locker room folding towels.
The kid went to Callahan and said he made a mistake, and now he has apologized. All your suggestion of benching (or even worse...dismissing...how stupid) for a comment, which the player took steps to correct on his own, would do is hurt the team further.
Like giving up a 1000 yards and 100 points in 2 games left the program unscathed!? How else can a coach motivate a player? Read the comments about the McBride era and tell me how cuddly and soft we should be with the players who have the balls to say fans should stay home who want to boo... heres a thought, there was a reason the fans booed, its called piss poor DEFENSE! Improve the play, and watch the fans support you. In fact, the fans already do that... you wouldnt tell me to shut up when I cheer for a good play, so why tell me to shut up for boping bad play... it goes hand in hand!!
Where did I say anything about booing? Your problem, at least right now, is that the defense isn't playing well. So a player makes an inappropriate comment after the game, you want to dismiss him, and you think that will make the other players do better? Your problem is the defense is sucking, but you're punishing a player for something totally unrelated to defensive play, and expect it to make the team player better? Have you been drinking?

I said this thread was to get the attention of the fans, and it worked. You dont actually have to kick someone off the team to make your point, but you have to let them THINK you are serious so they will respond the way you need them to, no matter if it hurts their feelings. Its not about feelings, its about tradition, the program and ultimately winning championships. You wont get that with players who spout bollocks about fans booing, because they are not focused on what they should be... the GAME itself.

All this talk about firing this person and that... blah blah blah. The same things were being said when BC was hired. Accept it, things dont always go to plan, the thing you have to do is keep trying. Bill is making strides as head coach as evidenced by his last 2 QBs breaking school passing records! I admit Coz is driving me nuts by letting the boys slide with their half azz effort, he should be in their faces threatening them with their blackshirt (which by the way all Defensive players should have surrendered willfully by now because they dont deserve them) and starting jobs. If the starters on D dont want to play with the vigor and fire that past defenses have had, they have no place on the field. I think Steve Octavien should be kicked off the team for what he said about the fans. We pay big bucks to keep a record alive! A very real and important record that the FANS made possible, no player has any effect on that... and that kid has the balls to tell us to stay home!?! Take his blackshirt and 3rd string his a$$! that will send a strong message to the rest of the team about what it means to be a blackshirt.

:bonez
Ha ha! Good joke post. Nobody can really hold an opinion that is so far off base, can they? Can they?

NO BIGGER A JOKE THAN WHAT THE BLACKSHIRTS HAVE BECOME...

I've only been a Father for ~6 years, But in the transformation I find myself wanting to teach my little guys good sportsmanship..It's not always easy with some of the overzealous parents and even some coaches.

So until this booing thing blows over..unless I can explain it all away to some kind of acceptable behavior..That some people believe they're actually trying to "Motivate" others into somehow trying harder or else...

where was I going?

Oh yeah..Refresher Course (Fans should be good sports too, at least the "greatest fans" should).

GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP RULES

1. The "Golden Rule" -- Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

- show respect for them if you expect it yourself.

2. Have an understanding and an appreciation of the rules.

- the spirit of good sportsmanship depends on conforming to the intent of the rule and not look for a loop hole. (Example - all players present must bat so several weak hitters are asked to stay home for an important game)

3. Enjoy yourself and encourage enjoyment for others.

- we play sports for recreation so lets make it that.

4. Take responsibility for your actions.

- don't blame others for your mistakes or find excuses for poor behaviour.

5. Recognize and appreciate good performances, especially by the opponent.

-Applause for an opponent's good play demonstrates generosity and courtesy. It shows a true awareness of the game and athletic ability.

6. Exhibit respect for the officials.

- Umpires are impartial arbitrators who perform to the best of their ability to make sure the game is played fair and within the rules. Mistakes made by all those involved are part of the game and must be accepted.

7. Expect proper behaviour from your teammates.

- if you allow a teammate to cheat, to play dangerously, to argue and scream at officials, you are condoning that behaviour.

Examples of Acceptable behaviour

Shake hands with the opponent before and after the game, regardless of outcome.

Cheer in a positive manner.

Accept all decisions by officials without question.

Applaud good plays by both teammates and opponents.

Applaud at the end of the contest for the performance of all participants.

Encourage all surrounding people (fans included) to display on sportsmanlike behaviour.

Show concern for an injured player, regardless of team.

Win with class - lose with dignity.

Examples of Unacceptable Behaviour

Use disrespectful or derogatory comments, cheers or gestures.

Criticize officials in any way - displays of temper over an officials call.

Make displays of temper when you or a teammate are not successful.

Refuse to shake hands or recognize good play.

Laugh or name-call to distract an opponent.

Criticize other players or coaches for the loss of a game.

Use profanity or display anger.

So basically your posts in this thread are all BS. Alright, fair enough.
I didnt say I didnt believe in what I said... I do. Will it happen, no... kids are too soft these days to handle that kind of discipline. Should it be done to get their attention? yes. would it work? yes. would the fans go for it? no... as evidenced by the outcrying support for a player who told you to stay home and that you dont matter to the program because you dont wear a helmet. And you know, dont get mad at me for saying what need to be said. At least I have the balls to speak up and say what is really on my mind instead of being lulled into some kind of group think where we bullsh#t ourselves into thinking everything is ok.
