But digging into the numbers we caused 9 turnovers in the 3 non-conference games (3/game) and then 12 turnovers in conference play (1.3/game).

The thing is that might be the case for a lot of teams. Chances are offenses turn the ball over more in the first few games. (I don't actually know that though, just guessing).

Also, typically, a conference Poe is going to be better, on average , than many of the non-con games.
