One of the complicating factors of racism is that very few people acknowledge that they are racist, or even if they are self-aware of their racism they will never admit it.Others... I think they're operating and living in a world where they don't believe they're racist, but may perhaps be blind or naive to why certain perspectives they hold are, in fact, racist.
I conduct discrimination claims for a living and have talked to many people who are certainly racist, or at the very least they have committed actions that negatively impact others based on race, but no one has ever admitted to me that they are racist. I've talked to KKK members, and they say they are not racist ("it's not the color of their skin, it's their f#&%ing attitude" is a quote that will forever be burned in my memory). I don't even ask people if they are racist or not, the verbal answer is meaningless. We have to take a deeper dive into their words, actions, and attitudes.
Something we all need to acknowledge is that everyone has their own biases, sometimes we are aware of them, sometimes we aren't. If we have biases against others because of race or ethnicity, it is very difficult to come to terms with, but if those biases manifest themselves in ugly actions that others can see...
