Honest question from MN fan

Walk-on
Gopher fan here – I am probably looking through maroon and gold colored glasses but, having said that , my observation is that many/most Husker fans seem to think NU has better talent than most of the other teams in the Big10. I think that is clearly wrong. It seemed to me that during the MN/NU game that the Gophers clearly had the better O and D lines. AM was kept locked in the pocket the entire game and was unable to use his legs. AM has never been, as far as I can see, a great passer.

The problem for NU is that SF has not developed the talent he has recruited. Take Bryce Benhart for example, MN tried hard to recruit him as he seems to have all of the tools to be good but… he has no business starting as a freshman. It takes time for big men to develop their full strength and techniques. At another school, WI, IA, MN, and now IL under BB he would not see the field until he was a Jr or Sr.

It will be interesting to see if his experience at NU has ruined him as a future player.

In short, NU does not have better players than other Big10 teams – NU has better athletes perhaps but not better football players and that is why NU is losing games.

I’m done, fire away.

Regardless Frost needs to bring in better players or develop better so end of the day it doesn't matter. I think we have a few skill players who are up there but it's only a few kids. Our defense is good enough to keep us in games most of the time. The offense is just a big mess - remember we only have 1 SR who starts and he's a grad transfer. We have lost our best playmaker each season and that sets us back even more. Maurice Washington, JD Spielman, Wandale Robinson. Toure graduates this year and wouldn't doubt if someone else transfers.

We do have some good young talent just not sure we will ever get to see it all the way through. Next season we would need to run 2 TE sets all game and rely more on RB and not have the ball in Martinez's hands all the time if he does comeback and starts.

We're still divided on whether or not Frost should be fired, but I think everyone is in agreement that our O-line coach Greg Austin needs to be shown the door. Most of our offensive struggles stem from having a s#!tty O-line.

On paper our recruiting classes put us at or near the top of the division, so this isn't some made-up belief from Husker fans. You're right in that we don't develop talent as well as we should, and certainly not as well as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa or Northwestern. That's why we're talking about firing coaches.

Not sure what you're on about with Benhart. This is his third year in the program.

You're preaching to the choir. It goes way beyond this superficial analysis.

Minny lost to Bowling Green, at home.

So...yeah.

I'm a MN fan as well.

We'd love to have your recruiting rankings.  Seems like no matter who your coach is, your rankings are always the highest in the Big Ten West.

The case of Benhart, he's in year 3 now, but I think Frost had to start him too soon, and I think that has hurt his trajectory.  I don't know if Frost's culture wasn't right for the old O-lineman left by Mike Riley.

My theory is that Frost doesn't know how to develop all of the players. The rubber isn't hitting the road with his coaching style.  It does for the kids like Jojo Doleman  who has a great respect for authority, but 100% of kids these days aren't like that.

I seriously think the best thing for Benhart would be to transfer to Wisconsin at this point. He and Minnesota have no love for each other, so going to his second choice in Wisconsin might be wise.

This is exactly the issue.

Nebraska has better potential than most teams in the west. Not better available talent. Potential needs time to be maximized and mature into talent that is seen on the field. We do not have maximized and mature talent on the offensive side of the ball, we do have potential.

Sure.

But we wouldn't trade that loss for any win we've accumulated so far.

This is the other question for Husker fans, since I see a lot of videos on youtube about Minnesota from Husker fans prior to the game saying "Minnesota's horrible. They lost to BG, at home".

How long does that apply, and in those assessments, are any other data points from the Gophers season taken into consideration?

No, when you lose at home to a 31 point dog you are horrible.

Minny is horrible, NU is horrible, PU is horrible, NW is horrible, Iowa has scored 14 points in their last two games and they were ranked 2nd, Wisconsin can't complete a pass.

The west is horrible.
