Why it will be open: When Scott Frost took over the Cornhuskers program in 2018 there was nothing but optimism coming out of Lincoln, and for plenty of good reason. Frost had just led UCF to an undefeated season and a a bowl win over Auburn, and was being hailed as an offensive genius returning to his alma mater. But now he's staring down the barrel of a fourth straight losing season and has yet to finish better than fifth in the Big Ten West. With a new AD in place at Nebraska there is almost zero doubt that Frost will be gone at or before the season's end.

Farrell's pick: Bill O'Brien

The former Penn State and Houston Texans head coach has spent this season at the Nick Saban Rehabilitation Camp for Coaches, where he is now serving as the offensive coordinator for one of the best offenses in the country. He's a proven commodity, too. People will forget, but he took over Penn State at the low point in that program's history in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and led it to back-to-back winning seasons before heading to the pros. He made the playoffs four times in six seasons with the Texans as well, and would bring some stability and veteran leadership to that position. Other names - like Matt Campbell and Luke Fickell - will be mentioned, but O’Brien would have the best shot at success.

As the old saying goes, never say never. Right now there are 2 openings (LSU and USC) who have a much better recent track record than Nebraska that we are competing with. They could fill their positions with James Franklin, Mel Tucker or someone like Fickell, or someone completely different.  If they only want Fickell or Campbell, it will be tough to compete with them given how much money we would owe Frost.  

With that said, the appeal of the Nebraska job is that reality that the Big Ten will be more likely to land a CFP berth than the Big 12 or Pac 12 in the future, and navigating the BIG West is easier than navigating the SEC West as would be the case with the LSU job. We have good athletes and Frost had 3 top 25 recruiting classes from 2018 to 2020, so all we need now is the right coach to come in and help the program get back to winning.  Expectations are far lower right now at Nebraska than at LSU or USC so that could be another appeal to come in and be the guy that finally turned the program around.

We're in such a weird place where like 100% of the outside world has thought Frost has been a dead man walking for a year. But internally still has an insane amount of support for someone that has accomplished very little (nothing of substance?) in 3+years.

I think this is key.  We are going on the possibility of a 5th losing season....4 with the same coach.  As you mentioned, we have had 3 top25 classes so talent hasn't been an issue (development has).  I also wonder about a guy like Phalen Sanford who crushed the testing.  He even get on the field.  Seems like a dude that athletic would be used somewhere.  And if we are truly "this close", a coach who can motivate the guys to rise and grind and truly fix the "little things" should have a good shot at having a monumental redemption season year 1......Being bad, truly makes it easier to get a good coach IMHO.  They should look at what we have and say yea, I can make that work...

Outside of listing names for a new head coach, here are some traits I would be looking for:

  • Proven winner as a head coach (at least 3 seasons as a head coach with a .650 or higher winning percentage)
  • Demonstrated the ability to change coaching style and approach when something is not working
  • Ability to build an effective staff of assistants and get the most out of them
  • Ability to maximize results with the talent on hand
  • Willing to make the touch decision of personnel changes in a timely manner
  • Ability to tailor a game strategy to the opponent (outcoach an opponent that may have superior talent)
 
Campbell would sort of be a dude hire in my mind.  Lame recruiter, boring offense, doesn't wow me much.

Iowa smokes him all the time...WVU just beat him...Still might have two losses at least left after starting the year like ranked 8th.

Rivals.com national recruiting director Mike Farrell tweeted that the hiring is a "home run."

"I don't think Huskers fans realize what a well-respected game coach Riley is and how hard it is to win in Corvallis," Farrell wrote.

Oh BS.

We are losing games and Frost might be let go at season's end and a new coach will have an opportunity to come in and turn it around.

There is one hell of a lot that the Huskers have to offer here right now that could attract top coaching talent.  

Anywhere these guys go, they are going to be going into a situation where the previous coach was fired (probably) if that place is a major P5 program.  And yes, Nebraska is still a major P5 program even though we aren't winning games.

 
I keep changing my mind on what Trev will do. Part of me thinks that he will keep Scott and  have Scott hire a big time OC and SPT coach. To hopefully rev up the offense. I think he will keep him till closer to when the new facilities are completed and that way Trev and say to a new coach look at all the shinny. If Frost does not work out.
