Some stats for a 3-7 team

I took a quick look at how much we we have led in the 2nd half of the 8 losses

Michigan St lead for 4 mins

MIchigan lead for 7 mins

Purdue lead for 12 mins

Did not lead at all in Illinois, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Ohio St, or Wisconsin (The Wisconsin game was the only one of these 5 that was ever tied)

So out of a total of 240 2nd half minutes, Nebraska was ahead for 23 minutes or 9.6%.

Saying we are "close" does not equal "moral victory".  Someone can believe we are close and still be pissed off that we are losing.

Oh SP+ where have you gone?  The last we talked it was pre-season and hopes were abound of a successful season.  SP+ is the great forecaster as we know (like Carnac the Magnificent only with less personality) and the history pointed to a progressively better season.  3 Wins...

When conventional metrics do not provide the evidence one needs to support progress, we turn to alternative metrics such as SP+.  How much better does the fan base feel when the title of "Greatest 3 Win Team" is bestowed upon it?  For many we could point to the VL+ metrics (i.e. Vince Lombardi), "winning isn't everything, but it is the only thing" when it comes to football.  

Let's go find 4 assistant coaches willing to commit to a one year deal, conduct the one year charade which is 2022, and then proceed to transition.  We are competitive, but something is clearly missing when you amass a 5-19 record in one score games.  Undeniable at this stage.

 
One stat from Sam's column today pointing to why we are 3-8:  We have 12 takeaways on defense through 11 games, good for 12th in the B1G and 99th in the nation.

 
@Red Five Meh. Certainly we'd like to have more there, but that's just one part of the story. This defense isn't flashy, but it's still plenty effective.

Can't create takeaways without a good pass rush. Good pass rushes create strip sacks and hurried/inaccurate/tipped passes which create interceptions.

In and of itself, the Huskers’ last-minute disemboweller of a loss to rival Wisconsin would count as a difficult Saturday, if not particularly worthy of Main Character recognition. Nebraska, after all, is now 3-8, and nobody spends all that much time heaping national mockery onto teams with such records, unless they’re Texas. (It’s really fun, how bad Texas is.)

Except Nebraska does this every single week. And I dunno about you, but I was tired of mocking this poor team over a month ago. Nebraska has broken the Main Character’s capacity for hateration.

Their only loss by more than a touchdown was by nine points to freaking Ohio State. They nearly beat the teams currently ranked No. 2, No. 6, No. 10, No. 12, and No. 18 in the AP. Power ratings like SP+, Team Rankings, and FPI, all of which perform well against Vegas, consider Nebraska a top-35 team, better than some teams with 10 or even 11 wins.

It’s not even a joke. This is the best three-win team ever, at least since teams started playing schedules of more than, like, eight games. What a horrible thing to be.

This result had to cut as deep as any of the others, not only because of compounding despair, but because Nebraska should’ve gotten one last chance much closer to the goal line.

What do the 2021 Huskers and 25-cent gas have in common?

Except for last year’s short season, the last time the Huskers ended the season with 3 wins was... 1961.

1961. Gas was 25 cents a gallon. A new car was about $2,500. A new house... around $12,500. JFK became President. World population was 3.1 billion. The Houston Oilers won the AFL title (pre-Super Bowl years).

And the Huskers won 3 games and finished 7th in the 8 team Big 8.

And Scott Frost would be born 14 years later.

But now of course, The Red could just go ahead and get another win.
 

 
"You are what your record says you are" is one of the stupidest quotes I've ever heard.

One, because it's...not true. Two, because it's essentially just saying, "You win as many games as you have the higher score than the other team at the end in."
