2022 Fall Camp Notes - Special Teams

beside maybe a punt returner getting blasted how many people usually get hurt on special teams?  Maybe an occasional concussion on kickoff but for the life of me through my playing and coaching career I don't remember anyone getting hurt.  Don't recall too many in any games I've watched as a fan.

I've always asked this question.  It seems like they are constantly trying to make kick off "safer".  But, I've always asked....how many guys actually get hurt on kick offs?

Most injuries on kickoffs were with the blockers and defenders running down full speed, and not so much the guys returning the kicks themselves.  The rules imposed on kickoffs in recent years have been done to reduce the number and impact of violent collisions.

Not sure how to feel about this.  I was told we don't want starters like Rahmir on STs because he'll be tired on the 1st play from scrimmage after running 50 yards from the front line of kick return.

Rahmir may not be the starter at running back just yet thats's why Nebraska may be trying to use him there at special teams coverage. Nobody know's who is going to start  :dunno

I thought the comments meant he would be on kickoffs.....not kick returns.  So, he would have time to rest.  Other than those kickoffs where we recover the fumble.

If Rahmir was truly the number 1 every down back, I really don't think they'd have him on every STs unit.  I really think Rahmir is going to be their favorite 3rd down back and get plenty of PT, but I don't he'll be the guy with the most carries at the end of the year.

Entirely possible.  But it's also possible that he's just worked his way onto every team and if he ends up being the starting RB they'll take him off a couple of them.

With as piss poor as our special teams have been, and the fact that unit alone has cost us several games in Frost's tenure, I say throw caution to the wind and put your best guys out there. If the RB 1 race is super tight, the drop off from RB 1 to 2 shouldn't be that big, and we need all the special teams help we can get after these last several years. Especially if Frost wants to save his job

Frost touched on the kicking specialists projected to start: punter Brian Buschini and field goal kicker Timmy Bleekrode.

"I feel great about kicker and punter right now, which puts a smile on my face to say," Frost said. "I think we’ve got several who can do it and have been doing really well in camp. It’s different when the lights are on in the soccer stadium, but what I’ve seen from them we’re gonna be vastly improved."

Another wrinkle NU worked into practice has been making the returners catch punts and kicks in a variety of lighting. Busch said they wait until the sun is at a certain point and make players field balls in direct sunlight and then on the other side when the ball goes from light into shadows.

They also have them do it with the stadium lights on since the game in Dublin will go into the evening.

Busch reiterated that Nebraska’s punt returners were instructed to put their heels at the eight-yard line and let any ball that went over their heads go. However, if a player caught a punt at the seven, “I’m not going to lose my mind over it.”

Asked about players who had stood out to him this fall for their work on special teams, Busch noted Chris Kolarevic as “a big-time standout.”

Busch also named Rahmir Johnson, Travis Vokolek, Isaac Gifford, Tommi Hill, and Luke Reimer.
