North Dakota - What did we learn?

Frost continually has too much trust in his defense to make stops at the end of the first half, along with thinking the offense will be successful in the 2-minute drill at the end of the first half.  Over the past 8 games, when NU has gone 1-7, NU has been outscored 31-3 by their opponents in points with less than 2 minutes left in the first half.

I know Frost is trying to get the ball back to his offense, but honestly he should be trying to limit the damage by the opponent sometimes.

The problem is that those weren't borderline.

Targeting is either leading with the crown of the helmet, or forcible contact to the head/neck area of a defenseless player. A receiver in the air is defenseless, as is a quarterback in a throwing motion. Both players got hit with forcible contact to their heads. 

I agree that they should have been targeting, but the refs didn't. The problem is that Targeting can be added as an extra to a personal foul call for either roughing the passer or defenseless player. The refs in both instances, only called targeting. As such, the only thing that can be reviewed is the targeting which leads to the possible expulsion of the player. Neither case included the personal foul (which both should have been), they could only go off the targeting. Since the refs could only review targeting and could not tack on the personal foul after the fact, the team got screwed out of penalty yards in both cases.

I don't mind some additional collaboration and input from Frost, but for Frost to take over play-calling duties would show me that Frost doesn't trust his assistant coaches, and is not a fit for the head coaching job long-term.

The reason the offense looked sluggish in the first half is that UND had the ball for nearly 3/4 of the time.  The D can't let an opponent keep the ball away for huge chunks of time.

Is it though?

So tell me again how it's the defenses fault when Nebraska had 2 possessions that went 3 or less plays?

Offense didn't help them.

On any pass play, helmet to helmet contact involving a QB is a penalty.  The review is to determine if it was ALSO targeting and ejection. Regardless of the review, it is within "unnecessary roughness".  That's why the flag was tossed, but they screwed up the actual call. I don't believe it was crown targeting, but still a late hit to the head with a helmet.  15 yarder, every time.

Remember when the Minnesota's Qb ran the ball against us, dove downward, and our defender made helmet to helmet contact? It was a penalty, then reviewed for targeting.

And for the record, the NW RB used his helmet and crown 5 or 6 times running with ball, like Walter Payton.  Last year MSU Heyward did the same.  Looks physical and great, but targeting by both runners.

The 1st half was some of the worst football I've ever seen at Nebraska, which is saying something.   I seriously thought we were going to lose for a good chunk of the game.

Grant has a lot of potential.   If Frost has any say he'll get like 4 carries next week lol.

Offensive Line looks even worse.  I didn't think it was possible.   The Raiola hire continues to baffle.

Nelson is the last true Blackshirt.  Might as well retire the tradition when he's gone.  Might not be a player who is perfect all the time, but I'd take 11 guys with his demeanor and effort on defense without hesitation.

Casey Thompson has a lot of talent.   Needs to stop trying to win the game on every play and just take what's there.  I doubt he survives the season.  Chubba better get ready.

WRs are talented, but need to be more consistent. 

Bring on Head Coach Mickey Joseph.  October can't get here soon enough. 

Mickey Joseph needs to focus more on his position group performing better than going from position coaches to IHC.....otherwise you'll be blasting him by Halloween.

It was 24-17 with 11 minuties left in the game.

Not polar opposite.  Tied 7-7 at the break, and the Huskers at home, beat down a gritty North Dakota team that got gassed without size, talent and depth.  I mean, it typically happens across the board in the 2nd half against FCS teams that went 5-6.  

HCSF said it was a weird week, because of the traveling.  The guys were tired and off.  QB1 CT said he was sick all week. 

A sluggish game should have been expected by us (fans).  Maybe next game the offense will ball out and the defense will get some stops.

I don't think Thompson is really that much better of a passer than Martinez. He does make quicker decisions in general though, so he gets the edge by a small margin. But he's either overthrown or underthrown some pretty key passes in two games and those are sometimes mistakes that end drives.

Anthony Grant is the most complete back we've probably had since Ameer Abdullah. While Maurice Washington was an extremely talented athlete, Grant is too, and he can bounce off people and keep his balance to go upfield.

I really liked that the offensive staff switched it up and just started feeding him the ball. We easily could have lost if they hadn't done that.

More special teams f***-ups, as usual. It just never ends.

We need Fidone and Vokolek out there. A third string TE commits holding while on his back on a guy who couldn't have even made a play on the ball.    :facepalm:

I'm not convinced that the Sooners will beat us.  No matter the outcomes of any other games.  NU/OU is a different deal no matter where it's played or at what point in the season and no matter how the rest of the season went. 

This might be the worst Nebraska team I've seen in...ever.  

The Sooners will beat us.  Frost will get fired.  Our Video Hype Team will have us excited for 2023.
