***The Nebraska Defense - Blackshirts 2023***

Going back to Prime and his first meeting with the team.  To paraphrase, y’all were 1-11.  You were part of the reason for a losing season.  Can’t blame everyone else without owning up that you were a part of it.  Same with NU.  I think the new staff will develop them to play better.  Something that was lacking in the scientific “eye ball” test.  But the end of the day, some responsibility lays on the guys who played.  I feel confident that Rhule is working through all of this and some (most) of the players will be completely different than they were in their previous years at NU.

I think Farmer was probably better than most gave him credit for.  But he and Tanner are definitely replaceable.

Ok, fair enough.  Maybe no one does, or just a few are ok with it IMO.  I'm not going to speak for everyone.  But with a new HC, DC and defensive philosophy (3-3-5), it's okay to be okay with former players moving on after 4 years. We gave them props every year for 2-3-4 years while they were here, including appreciation and support, and some tough love.  Week after week.  That is me speaking on behalf of me and maybe some others. What else must we do if we mention them?  Put up a statue or a plaque?  I'm fine they are gone because they had their glory and their time... it was great during their time here. But now, this year, it gives opportunity for others to do the same.  It's really no biggie.

I get what you’re saying. I liked Nelson and thought he  would have been viewed different if he has better players around him.

I am excited but a bit concerned with the 3-3-5 defense.  I watch a lot of TCU games and that's their philosophy too.  I think we hold up well with them.  The 3-3-5 requires athleticism and speed and incoporates some confusion.  But, it requires the safeties/rover/corners to help with tackling and play closer to the line.  In the past, that is the last thing the secondary wanted to do well at.  So I am hopeful that this years coaches have the fellas onboard with playing physical all game, and not just during a drive or two.  They will be highly pivotal in helping the defense with the run game with the linebackers.  

I think TCU finished around 70th in run defense last year, and that's with guys who already knew how to play in the system.  Yikes.

But also, Colorado will play TCU (3-3-5) the week before us (again 3-3-5) and I think it will give them a slightly better edge for it.  

If the secondary (back 5) gets gased during a game, big plays will happen.  Also, teams will run 4 verticals to open it up and also try to run the edges (off tackle).  

It's certainly going to be exciting to watch and see how the Blackshirts do this year with this type of defense.  They definitely have the speed and athleticism for it.  And I believe they will be good to great early on.  Could be different when they are trailing by more than one score.  I like our secondary this year, and our linebackers.  The line seems to be good too.  Depth and big chunk plays could be a concern.

I think it'll be a rough go to start out with working out some kinks. I also think a lot depends on just how patient opponents are running the ball (read: stubborn), against us, which we know B1G teams love to be.  I'm honestly thrilled Wisconsin is moving away from what they've always done, because it's a mistake against equally or less talented teams.  Sure they won't beat OSU or Michigan with what they used to do, but they are now going to allow other teams some easy 3 and outs with the air raid versus those 7 minute soul crushing drives.

Word.  

I'll just add that the 2 games at home (N.Illinois & LaTech) will help the defense a lot after the the first two road games.  Defense will likely be tested the first few weeks for sure.  

It stinks to have to play Michigan after that, and then a short week (friday night at Illinois following them, but, the rest of the year we should be ready to play our best.  

On the flip side, might need the Offense to kick it up a notch in some games (Putting up points) and chewing clock (long drives).   Feels like success will go hand in hand if that happens (offense & defense).  

 
I don't understand why either Georgia or LSU would be dragging their feet.  Not like we play in the same conference or are going to have a potential matchup in the playoffs.  Just sign off on it.

Not sure who it is but LSU has completely turned over their staff. Probably don’t even know Erik. 

 
Im watching this Navy vs Notre Dame game and Navy's defense is getting shredded vs the run and pass.  I really hope our tackling improved and our defensive backs don't play soft coverage zone vs the wr's.  The thing I hate the worst is when it's 3rd and long and our db's play off the line of scrimmage and give the other teams the first down.  That mentality or play calling has to change make them earn it.  I'd rather see our db's get beat off the line instead of being 10 yards off of them and letting them be open.  I know we are going to have a new look on defense but other then what the coaches have said or clips we won't fully know how our defense will play or if the play calling will be suspect.
