Much earlier - had more to do with the selection of Adams as president & Jefferson as VP in 1796  (would be like Biden as President and Trump as VP in today's world)  And the very messy election of 1800 involving Adams, Jefferson, Burr --which lead to the Hamilton/Burr bad ending - Hamilton dead, Burr a political piranha.

A couple good explainers:

The 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution refined the manner in which the President and Vice President of the United States are elected by the Electoral College. Intended to address unforeseen political problems resulting from the presidential elections of 1796 and 1800, the 12th Amendment replaced the procedure originally provided for in Article II, Section 1. The amendment was passed by Congress on December 9, 1803, and ratified by the states on June 15, 1804.

Key Takeaways: 12th Amendment

  • The 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution modified the way in which the president and vice president are elected under the Electoral College system.
  • The amendment requires that the electors of the Electoral College cast separate votes for president and vice president, rather than two votes for president.
  • It was approved by Congress on December 9, 1803, and ratified by the states, becoming a part of the Constitution on June 15, 1804.
Thank you.

Strategically, I prefer Shapiro or Cooper. Personally, I prefer Buttigieg, so I voted for him.

Also, I just learned that the 12th Amendment pretty much precludes Newsom from filling the VP role in this instance (plus I think he's saving himself for a presidential run in 2028). It states that the presidential and vice-presidential candidate on the same ticket can't both reside in the same state as where the electors reside. Well, they can technically, but it would null and void the electoral votes from that state. And the D's definitely can't afford that net -54 in their vote column.

I’m not arguing for Newsome but it’s a relatively simple matter for one of them to change their registered state of residence. And it only has to occur before the official electoral college count, not immediately.

It’s gotta be Shapiro or the guy from NC for strategic reasons. I’d lean PA.

That’s the full amendment though. I’m referring specifically to the different states rule.

The 12th Amendment states

The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves

Vance makes such a stupid argument. It seems Trumpworld wants to keep running against Biden even after he dropped out so their arguments have to keep centering on him.

For a guy whose brains have been literal mashed potatoes ever since he took over, he sure has gotten some damn good results out of them tater brains.

I’m aware of that TGH. But I don’t believe your previous response explained the particular reason the state part was added, and you quoted the part that would be like Trump with Biden as VP. The reasoning behind that change is obvious.

I guess I'm not able to fully answer your question.  :confucius

Kelly makes a lot of senes to be the running mate. AZ is a purple state, and adding him should get AZ to move to a blue lean. He's a combat veteran, NASA pilot who has done space walks, comes from a LEO family, his wife survived an assassination attempt. Family man, I think he checks a lot of boxes that will help people vote for the ticket. He's everything that JD Vance wants to be, JD is the Temu version of Mark Kelly.

Shapiro is also a great candidate, and would help secure the PA votes, but I think Kelly's work with the Navy and NASA gives him the slight edge to be a better option.

Harris can win if she loses Arizona.

She can't win if she loses Pennsylvania.

True, IMO Kelly's still the better overall candidate, especially after the win. Shapiro doesn't check as many boxes as Kelly, but he is the better candidate before the win, especially if he can lock PA blue.

Better overall candidate in a vacuum sure, but the only thing anyone brings to the table is if they can help specifically clinch mandatory electoral votes, which makes Kelly one of the worst candidates.

Regardless who Harris picks, I bet they have not said in the past about Harris any of these phrases by JD in his more honest days:

I'm a never Trump Guy

He's an idiot

He is America's Hitler

Trump is noxious

Trump is reprehensible

I never liked him
