UTEP Week Pressers

Some reading comprehension fails around what was being said about running back by committee. Not referring to you though, Husker in WI.    :)

The point wasn't that playing four guys holds the team back in and of itself nor that Barthel isn't good at picking the best guy.

The point was that they're all basically on the same level, and that level is demonstrably roughly "average." So the fact that nobody has broken through to the next level during the offseason into that next tier of ability is kind of a bummer for this season.

We don't seem to have a back that's "great" on this team, and we maybe don't even have one that's "good." That's a bummer for me.

But, there's nothing bad about the system itself of playing several guys. It does help keep the legs fresh.

While it always feels good to know there is "the guy" who is a clear cut step above the rest, I find myself entirely unconcerned about our four backs on the depth chart. All of our best rushing seasons in modern memory have had multiple dudes able to get it done.

'06 had Lucky, Jackson, Glenn and Wilson, with different guys getting hot at different times throughout the season.

'08 had Lucky as THE guy, but by the end of the season Helu emerged as the top dude with Castille as a bona fide bruiser.

'10-13 at any given time had at least three viable dudes between Helu, Burkhead, Abdullah, Heard, Green, Cross, etc.
Now that I think about it, that's an excellent point !

This!!!

RB is one position that it doesn't bother me that we don't have a clear RB1.  Would it be nice if we had one that showed he was an absolute stud?  Sure.  But, RB by committee is fine.
Now that I think about it, that's a great point !

Now that I think about it, that's another great point !

If they all are good and about the same, nothing wrong about a committee.  Maybe one or two or four will become great  chuckleshuffle :)
