What did we learn UNI edition

Not my thoughts but an interesting perspective from someone on reddit:

It is always going to be ugly when you face a team like UNI because you just don't have many drives to work with. Nebraska had just 8 drives in this game, excluding the run to end the game, and scored on 6 of them."

Since I'm not an expert and this makes me feel good I'm gonna believe it.

 
Of course I hope we don’t have to be in a 60min grinder. Wouldn’t that be so 92-01? 

Im really glad we aren’t turning the ball over, dumbass penalties at the worst times, and look just discombobulated 40% of the time.  
 

I watched Rhules presser after my post (thx Mav) and am comfortable with the growth.  
 

im really happy we have gone the first 3 w minimal injuries and just gained some damn confidence.  
ihope these young men are ready for the grind of B1G football and can play 60 when needed.  
so fun to start this way.  Let’s gooooo!!

 
Through three games so far, I have seen enough to be hopeful that we might be starting to turn that elusive corner. I had my doubts that Raiola would be this good so early, but he seems to be cool and calm under pressure which makes the offense around him much better. Here is what I learned so far:

(1) Dowdell and Jacory seem to the real deal and very promising

(2) Our defense seems to have embraced the bend but don’t break mentality. I feel they need to get better in stopping the run with some very good RB that we will face this season.

(3) Our non-special teams seem to still be work in progress

(4) We still commit silly and costly penalties 

(5) We take our foot of the gas when we get a lead

Having said that, I am pleasantly surprised with the team overall. I am hopeful for the first time in a decade. Friday will be a real test. If we beat Illinois, we can end up winning 8 or 9 games this season. Fingers crossed.

 
I learned 10 should definitely be playing ahead of 56.  A middle linebacker who plays an entired half against a run heavy team and doesn't get his number called over the loud speaker isn't very good.  Shavers got himself involved his first play in.  42 made an impact as soon as he got in.  The speed difference between 42/10 and 56 was pretty noticeable.  I also learned Indiana might be a problem this year

I was driving home during the latter half of the 2nd quarter and was listening to Gary Sharp & Damon Benning. Damon is highly complimentary of Satterfield's offensive concepts. There's a glaring contrast between what he was saying and why you read in the game thread, and here.

Maybe we're on the same page here, but I read the bold as a good thing.

You're up big, you're going to win the game no matter what; there's no reason to show the better opponents down the stretch all of your good stuff but you also want to give teams a bunch of things to have to prepare for. Kind of like how we ran a jet sweep with Barney in the second half against Colorado and then after that faked it, etc.

Satterfield seems to have a good sense for where the team's talents reside and how to best leverage them for chunk plays.

I think the mediocre-to-average teams will continue to sell out to stop the run against us. We showed some good pass blocking tonight in those situations and Raiola found receivers all night. It was great stuff.

 
I learned that we still need to stay focused throughout the whole game.  Tackling is still an issue although it is better than last year.  We didn’t fumble the ball so ball protection was good but we’re still making too many mistakes.  The coaches know what they need to work on.  I’m hopeful for next Friday as we play our first B1G team.  I love our team! GBR!❤️🏈

 
I loved most of what I saw #15 do. Only thing that ground my gears was the qb run on the goal line. If he just ran to the sideline that’s 6.

IMO, we've been tested enough for me to be confident we're a 7+ win team. I'm more confident than that but I still want to see us play some B1G teams first, based on what you are bringing up. It was nice to see Colorado handle CSU in that at least they were able to win another game. We haven't been tested enough for me to feel confident we'll win 10 games. If we go 7-0 then I'll assume we can beat UCLA, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Pretty much this.

I would add that I'm not sure that we've played a particularly good team yet.  But I think we've been "tested" a decent amount, at least on defense.  We played a team that wants to go hyper speed, a team with significant offensive weapons and can hurt you throwing and a team that is a physical running team.  So our defense has gotten a pretty good look and what they'll see this season.  And come through pretty well.

Not sure if we've played much for defenses yet.  But our offense has done what you should do against inferior defenses - score early and often.  Obviously the second halves leave plenty to be desired but that's been more dictated by game situation (and penalties) than anything.
