Purdue - What did we learn?

There was one or two where they had beat their man, but most of them were well covered and it was intentional. When the defender is right with them you can throw deep and hope it sneaks through, or you can throw short and let your receiver who is actually looking at the ball make the adjustment. I don't love it, but again I think most of them throwing short was the right call.

That might be true for the Purdue game, but there were plenty of examples in games before that where they were simply underthrown

Sometimes he's intentionally underthrowing because the receiver hasn't clearly beaten his man, and sometimes he's underthrowing because he needs to get better with his long ball.

This would also only explain the throws in the Purdue game, but maybe overthrowing Lindenmeyer is still haunting him. The deep balls have largely been disappointing and the precision has not been there, totally agree. I'm just not going to complain too much about the recent ones since they've still been positive overall.

I'm moreso disappointed with our receiving play (only slightly, this isn't a big criticism). Not all of it, and there have been bright moments, but our core too is too frequently unable to get separation, and I've seen way too high a percentage of blocks that either whiffed entirely or got called for holding or clipping. I think Dylan is making them look better than they are.

So, I’m far from an expert on this. But, is he trying to throw to the back shoulder?  I always hear this and never understand how a QB does that other than just under thieving the ball a little to the outside. So, he’s under throwing it, but not bro the outside?

I’m not. Hard to be disappointed by one of the best passers we’ve ever had at this university. Doesn’t mean he’s perfect and void of flaws though. Nor do I expect him to be. Just making observations. The fact that he is only a true freshman and will only get better is beyond exciting.

Man do i need to remind you we've been subjected to 15 straight years of guys like heinrich, casey thompson, adrian martinez, tommy a, taylor martinez, zac lee- name pretty much any qb we've had since joe ganz and they all have massive deficiecies either with arm strength, accuracy and sometimes both for any throws over 10 yards.... and you're "largely disappointed" with our deep balls?!?! sure, the kid could maybe loft it a bit less- but he's a true freshman and honestly, some of his lofty passes have scored us some key PI calls cause the defenders have zero idea where the ball is when its dropping down from that high.

i encourage you to go watch some tommy armstrong yolo bomb highlights and check back in on this thread.  would love to see if you're still largely disappointed lol

So, it can be one of two general throws.   
 

1). Think a wheel route type fade or man over 20-30 yrs fade pattern that are covered well or a goal line back shoulder fade.   A QB will see tight coverage and throw the ball more on a line purposely short and to the outside back shoulder on the deeper route.  A key though is for the receiver to keep running fast and make a sharp stop so the defender either runs past or into the receiver.    The goal like back shoulder is about 2 yards into the end zone on a dart towards the receivers back hip area.   Again, the receivers detail is just as important as the throw.  Can’t turn too early.   
 

2) A cover three deep 50 yard single coverage  bomb is generally trying to hit the guy in stride but if it’s covered well and short, the receiver is the one who again makes the play happen by running hard until the very last moment and stopping if possible on the  route vs just gradually slowing down because that’s easier for the defender to defend.   But those throws are a lot of times just seeing one on one coverage and saying my guy is better than yours and you don’t really over throw it for that reason.

Eh, he gets too much air under the deeper throws because he doesn't drive into it (his throws).

Casey was really good at that. (Driving the ball)

But also, Neyor and Banks are not exactly downfield burners.  So it's almost best to under throw a bit and allow the big body receivers a chance to get into a position to make a play.

They will work it out.  

If the deep ball is to Barney or Lloyd, just drive the ball and let them chase it down and catch it.

While I do not think that there is a complete catch-all for this issue- a great deal of time Purdue was loading the box so much that they were very likely in man-to-man behind it because they had too many personnel near the LOS. 

In that case, if the receiver has a step on the DB, a well thrown ball should be caught but a underthrown ball will result in the desperately trying to catch up DB running through the now stopping receiver and not looking back. It is an easy call for the refs. The thing that he doesn't want to do is overthrow them in that scenario.

So, the throws in the Purdue game could have been amazing back shoulder throws but the defender just ran into the receiver.
