What Did We Learn - Ohio State Edition

Even though we didn't get blown out of the water like I predicted we are at coulda, woulda, shoulda, and right now I have no faith in any of the coaches.  I think the coaches are greatly overrated and overpaid and don't understand why or how others can say trust the process with the coaches.  Another wasted opportunity to win and even though we are 5-3 this boat/season is sinking fast.

We've had one bad loss where we ran into a buzz saw. Our team isn't perfect but is much improved over what we have seen last decade imo. Besides last week, we actually have a defense. Not something you could say in years past.

I hope so, but we were 5-3 last year, too.  UCLA might be the only team we are favored to beat the rest of the way.  USC should beat us and we always struggle with Wisconsin and Iowa.  We win next week and I can see 7-5.  We lose next week and I can see 5-7.
Eh usc a train wreck right now.  I think we finish 3-1 with a dumb af loss against either wiscy or Iowa. USC a road game but there’s a very solid chance there will be more husker fans than usc fans in attendance

I learned that the D had a very bad game last week.

In Lincoln they are feeling like we can still get to a bowl game.

In Columbus, it is WTF time.  PSU, Indiana, and a major rivalry game are in front of them.  Ryan Day looks more like John Cooper instead of Urban Meyer or Tressel.

So our only losses on the year are to currently ranked teams. One of which was #4 on the road that we had every chance to win and another we lost in OT and should’ve won if raiola just completes the pass.  But yeah this boat is sunk 🤪

Is it me or does it feel like everything we say now has been redundant. We have been here so many times and had the same exact result that it feels more like a curse than anything else. Three different coaches, so many different QBs and yet we still cannot get over the hump. It is frustrating. We get games like today where you feel we are so close yet we are still so far. 1-27 in one score games, 7 years with no bowl appearances, and have not beaten a ranked team for ages. We keep convincing ourselves that a coach needs time to build but then you see Cignetti who gets a team with no football history whatsoever go 8-0 in his first year. Reality is that doing the same exact thing and expecting different results is the definition of stupidity. Rhule refuses to see that our Special Teams are anything but special and Satt is NOT a good OC and continues to make speeches about stability.

Reality is that it would not surprise me if we followed today’s play with bad play next week against UCLA because we are not consistent and we have yet to play a game where all three phases of the game were clicking. That is coaching. If we lose next week, I can see us going 5-7 and that would be going backwards, especially with us having a 5 star QB.

Its not just you and you bring up valid points.  There are many systemic issues that have been constant issues with this program.  Its unfair to boil it down to one or 2 things, but at least to me, our decline has coincided with our decline in play on the lines.  Football is by and large won at the LOS.  How long has it been since we've had multiple starters on the OL go to the nfl?  im probably forgetting a few but outside of jurgens and jaimes, who have we placed in the NFL in the last 10 years?

For the DL, we haven't had a guy since Randy Gregory who can terrorize the opponent.  That was 10 f'n years ago.

We've been a s#!t team running the ball for 10 years now outside of one stellar season from Oz who was a bo guy.  Quality line play is obviously a boost for the running game but it makes everything else that much easier to run when the defnese knows youre runing and you can still run with sucess.  Im still not convinced donovan raiola is worth his weight OL coaching wise but if he's the cost of having dylan at qb then i can live with it.  Objectively speaking, however, his 3 years have been rather lack luster.

We've been a s#!t defensive team in critical situations from late bo, thru riley, all thru frost and moments here and there into the rhule era... Our defense is vastly improved, but imagine what it would look like if we could get consistent pressure on the qb without bringing extra guys.  Imagine having a guy who can completely shut down a side to the point where the opposing OC needs to scheme differently for us.

We don't scare any one in either of these phases.  Yes, better OC play calling would work wonders, having a pure talent like Ameer at RB would obviosuly be a major boost, but its inexcusable we have been this below average for his long on both the DL and OL.

I still haven't seen a turn the corner game.  When is the last one score game we won where we didn't blow a bigger lead?  Where is our game winning drive on offense late that other teams do more regularly?  Hopefully, none of those teams will be ranked since we still haven't beaten one of those.  We will be favored to lose the 3 of those.  We still only scored 1 TD this game.  Luckily, we actually made all 3 FGs which is a rarity.  7-5 is the ceiling.  To go from 5-1 to 5-7 would be disastrous and even 6-6 with a bowl wouldn't feel like much of an improvement with a veteran D and a better QB than last year.  We blew the last 4 games last year when we should have easily been at least 6-6.  I'm tired of moral victories of one score losses.  We had plenty of those under Frost and last year.  I want to see results.

The little things are the difference.

And the officiating is so bad it's borderline criminal. IDK how it keeps happening to us, but it's not a coincidence.
One or 2 games with some BS calls and it is what it is.  Every game with some BS calls and it looks and feels intentional.  Unsure how that ever gets addressed or more importantly fixed.  Here is an older article about holding and Nebraska as one singular statistic.  Shows we are/were getting completely screwed in the holding department.  While older, I think it's still going on....https://arbitraryanalytics.com/2020/12/01/hold-up-whats-going-on-with-holding-calls/

Here's a great break down on todays game specifically....

I hate the emotional takes about Raiola being "bad" in this thread.

I get the perception he missed some wide open throws today, but reality is he's throwing us or nobody balls against sticky coverage that looks like a wide open miss because of what happens after the process of the pass begins.  He's a little gun shy, has some football work issues, and needs to lace more balls in, but most of what ails this passing attack isn't on DR.

On another note: Is Carter Nelson redshirting?  I have no idea how many games he's participated in, but he & Ramir seem like the kind of players you'd want running option routes vs what OSU was doing today.
