What Did We Learn - Ohio State Edition

After rewatching quite a bit of our offense in this game. I’m convinced that RB is quite possibly the worst offensive group. Worse than WR by far.

I agree.  He should be under every bit as much scrutiny as McGuire or Satterfield.  I'd lump Raiola in there too, but I don't think him being hired or retained had anything to do with his coaching acumen in the first place.  Since we can have unlimited coaches now, there's plenty of room for a second offensive line coach.

The thing is, if the RBs could see the holes and run through them, Raiola as an O line coach looks much better.

So Barthel isn’t developing RBs.

McGuire isn’t developing WRs.

Satt is clueless.

Seems like every offensive hire Rhule made was a downgrade.

What I don't get is that there are so many plays where it's like the RBs don't even know where the hole is supposed to be.  That has to be one of the simplest things to know.

I do think that one of the Johnsons should get the first half against UCLA and keep Dowdell on the bench just to try something different. Even though their vision isn't that much better than his, they still find ways to get that extra yard or two that Dowdell usually doesn't.

Rahmir is also better in the passing game.

I'm just all around disappointed in the staff with how badly we're utilizing our backs. I get it, if all four of them are completely talentless then we all get to just throw up our hands. But I don't think that's entirely the case.

I agree. EJ showed a lot of promise at the end of last year.  He hasn't been given the opportunity this year.   And what has happened to Gabe??

I agree Emmett showed some things last year, and in part time duty this year. But it didn't help that when he finally did get more carries against Rutgers, he went 14/33 while Dowdell went 14/57. I think Gabe's knees are just shot at this point. I would definitely be using both Johnsons more and Dowdell less, really not sure what the justification for the playing time breakdown is.

Gabe is still working to come back from injury.  Coaches said he is close this past week.

Did he get hurt again in the week leading up to the game? He's played in 6 games, including last week against Indiana. Just not sure he brings anything to the table that the other guys don't do better.

I understand where you are coming from but at the end of the day we need those throws to connect. There have been several throughout the season. He is elite but those are the plays we need him to make to go from OK at best to great on offense. The elite guys he wants to be like connect on those throws 9/10.

He is a freshman, it will get better but in my opinion he rushed the throw a hair. That timing will become natural with more reps and he will give it that extra half beat it needs to become a completed pass. It seems like he is trying to anticipate but does so a hair too early and just doesn't have the natural feel for the perfect timing quite yet.

To your point it's much better he is jumping the gun by an inch than throwing too late. Those throws turn into interceptions.

Agree.  I would love to see how a lot of the passing game looks in practice because you'd have a better sense of why it's off in games.  It looks to me like they are running routes to open grass more than they are running precision routes and that is a completely different animal in terms of timing.  I seem to recall one of Rhule's WR's from Baylor having difficulty transitioning to the NFL for that reason.

There are no such things as moral victories in my book. So it's still disappointing overall. But it is not nearly as disappointing as last week. More a "Dang, would have been nice to have that one." than "This is an unmitigated disaster."

So, it was a positive sign in many senses. The defense rebounded greatly. Yeah, they gave up a few big ones, Ohio State is going to do that to you. They otherwise were fantastic.

Offense...improved a little but overall lost us this one. Granted, they fought hard.

I was very worried about the team after Indiana. I still have many concerns, but, I am no longer thinking 5-7. We clearly can compete. I think 7-8 wins sounds right again.

Gabe has shown that he is the least capable of the four in my opinion. His physique looks the part, but he just doesn't quite have it.

Yes, his Freshman year I thought he could be the next Oz - then the first of many injuries occurred.    All of the injuries I think makes him the least capable.
