Iowa - What Did We Learn?

Interesting stat on the Iowa game from PFF that has been an issue all year:

Raiola got rid of the ball in 2.42 seconds when *not* under pressure but it was 3.73 seconds when he *was* under pressure.  Those two numbers should probably be exactly the opposite.  But he won't throw his hot routes.

Rhule has fielded the worst offensive unit in program history (2023) and now the worst special teams unit in program history (2024).

he showed urgency and a recognition he doesn’t have the right guys around him with the Dana hire late in the season.  I think it’s fair to say that close to 50% of the remaining staff should be seriously reevaluated and either completely replaced or demoted
Satt was average at best.  And me saying average is considering his 87th rank as average.  This includes his 2 stellar seasons at NU......Both below 87th (95th this year and 104 last year).....He was not his 1st choice at Temple.  Was not his 1st choice here. THEN WTH keep this dude.  And McGuire.....Please.  Foley?  Dude should have walked home from Iowa.  And truly should have been let got about 7 games ago.  LB/DB/RB.....They all need to be evaluated.  And whoever is our portal scout needs to be evaluated as well.

Wow.  More than a second longer.  I'm guessing that plays into the "pressure confuses him" comments?  He still, IMHO, plays with no sense of urgency.  No fire.  That last series NU acted like they had 3 TO's and 10 minutes on the clock.  No time management.  No intensity.  No fire.  No urgency.  No wins.

There were countless occasions last night when he had one, at times two, wide open guys in the flat and he didn’t hit them.  It was a big reason we beat Wisconsin so soundly and he didn’t go to it at the same level.

frankly I’m surprised he didn’t have more fumbles because nearly every one of the sacks it seemed like he had no idea a hit was imminent

Sorry, I like Bo and I liked his wins and we all hate every loss so that argument is not valid.  We all did the "He gets blown out in big games" bit but there are no big games if you are not winning a lot of games.

And last night was a close loss, how did that feel, did you guys LOVE it.

Anyway.  Rhule might be "the answer" but I think it is going to be as a CEO, which is fine, no one cares.  Just hire great coordinators and let them hire their asst coaches.

Worry less about HS recruiting and "developing" which I know Husker fans are in love with.  Let lame schools from the MAC and Sun Valley (is that a conference) develop guys for you, for 2-3 years, and then bring them here.

For years this has been true. Just keep the game close into the 4th and NU will beat themselves....Stats prove this.  I think Frost and Rhule are 7-32 in one score games....
And yet, Ruhle’s coaching instincts are to get a small lead and just milk it which in turn tends to keep the game as close as possible and NU ends up losing.

I’m even angrier about this game today than I was last night.  Reading on social media about  the antics of our players, to the national ridicule that we are getting, to the absolute statistical anomalies that we continue to have.. it’s mind boggling.

Our only shot at winning the bowl game is if our opponent overlooks us and/ or they have player opt-outs or lack of enthusiasm.
If we finish 6-7 - did we accomplish anything this season?

Coupled with the volleyball loss, not a good weekend to be a Husker.

We can be proud of our football tradition, but man .. I’m also thinking about the $$ spent on supporting this team and for me, it’s nearing the “waste” category.

I am there with you. I normally wake up and feel ok but this loss is not sitting well.  I really hate Trev Alberts right now for selecting Rhule and forcing us to be stuck with him for years because of the financial impact of the contract.  Rhule is not the guy to turn this program around and anyone pretending he is is just fooling themselves.  He is 11-13 in his first 2 seasons here and his team is only going bowling because we played the worst Wisconsin team in years at home.

Recruiting is no longer recruiting, buying players is much easier and Bo was a master at getting good JC guys, who would now be guys he would pluck from MAC schools.

Gone are the days of kissing the a$$ of a 17 year old.  Bo would have been recruiting grown men who would have loved him.
I heard an interview of Bill Self, probably a top 5 college basketball coach of all time, on this subject.   Some coaches hate the portal, but he says it great.   He said recruiting players for three or four years and still jot knowing if they will sign sucks compared to having a small window in the transfer portal to grab whatever players you need.   Says he loves it that way.

Yep!

You get to pick read made players!

Guys that have been in a college program, that have lifted in a college program, that have been to classes and know the routines.  That are, for the most part, physically and mentally mature.  They are not going to miss home, they are not going to hate the grind, they know it and understand it.

God, Bo would THRIVE with the transfer portal today.

That has been an issue all year long.   It’s either he isnt being taught properly on how to read who’s coming, or he’s been giving too much information in the headset at the time of the play call so he’s still trying to process that, or he legit just can’t read a blitz.  Either way, it’s very strange how NU hasn’t thrown to the vacated space much at all this year on a blitz or throw one on one jump balls to the outside to get rid of the ball.

I would have no problem with an entire new staff.

I know some fans are like "but the money!" but honestly, that is not a concern, the only concern is having a good FB team.  And NU is getting really close to become a typical lame a$$ Big Ten team.  That can't happen.
I don't get the money argument.  We are paying top 10 money for a crappy product right now! I'd rather keep spending it on better coaches and not accepting these results.

Edit: I meant assistants, too soon to buyout Rhule.

I hated Verduzzco, but he'd say DR is a slow blinker.  He continues, IMO, to hold the ball for what he wants and doesn't take what he has.  @Mavric continues to point out has abysmal 20+ completion rate.  I'll add he also has put up stats with his 10+ and IIRC, looks even worse.  I wish he'd grip and rip 5-6 yard routes and hope they'll grind for more yards than  YOLO his 20+ passes...Would love to see Tommy Armstrong percentage on those.  I looked with no luck.
