Who's Leaving? 2024/25 version

With the way the portal is evolving, there is zero reason to have a player on the roster with the intention of redshirting them if they have the ability to see the field in any capacity.   
 

A coach saying to a player you will see action in four games… that’s stupid.  Kids are transferring out to lack of playing time which is understandable.  So get what you can out of them.  If that’s special teams great, if that’s 5 plays a game on offense or defense that’s great.   But when players can take off whenever they want, use them while you have them and stop catering to them with a redshirt option if they can be useful at all on game days no matter how many plays they get

You can't make someone play though and some of these guys are playing 4 and then essentially quit

I would take it a step further and only recruit players you think could see the field immediately, not spend much time on projects.

That's the way it's going to have to be now in this new age of College Football.  Yes you still want to develop kids in your program but kids are going to have to develop extremely fast if you take a chance on them and the scholarship kids are going to have to be hits otherwise your team is going to fall behind.  There is no wiggle room to be wrong and the coaching staff's judgement is going to have to be spot on.  Take Nebraska kids for example you would say none of them are ready to play rn but Nebraska doesn't want to lose kids that will bleed for the program so most of them are 2-3 year projects.  

 
Essentially, college football is like the NFL now. Unless a player sees substantial playing time in their first year, they are going to bolt to seek teams that are willing to give them playing time. So, recruiting two excellent QBs is going to be impossible as they both want to play and showcase their talent. The transfer portal made it easy for this to happen and the hell with the academic side of things. Your education means nothing anymore as long as you have playing time. And if you don’t get recruited by the NFL then good luck finding a job. I still can’t believe that the NCAA has allowed this to happen. NIL and transfer portal have destroyed college football forever.

Traditional "sit and wait your turn" development is over.  With the 105 roster limit, there will be a veritable feast of riches to be had in the portal. Raid the Guys in G5 and FCS level.  Recruit kids who are game ready day 1.  I wouldn't even mention a RS unless foe medical reasons,  Don't waste a roster spot on a guy who RS's and leaves the next year. It is a rough business prior to NIL and the full blown portal.  Now it's going to be straight cutthroat if you want to win.  

Regardless of the "right way" or the "Nebraska way", Prime showed what you can do with the portal and NIL...2 first rounds picks, probable Heisman, Big 12 Offensive AND Defensive player of the year.....Cig at Indy #10 and in the CBP.....SMU....in the CFP....Arizona St in CFP, Oregon in CFP...UT and OSU top 10 portal classes and in the CFP...This is the model.  few schools can wait around and ignore this.   It's sad, but undeniable reality of college football.

There is 11 players on defense and 11 players on offense.  Another 22 if we count second string getting “playing time”

Let’s even add in another 20 for special teams and unique packages.

Thats 62 players.  That means 43 players aren’t going to get “significant” playing time.  Acting like the days of development and redshirting are over is a bit of an overreaction in my opinion. All the new limit does is get rid of walk ons, which sucks, but doesn’t mean scholarship guys will be any better than they were a year ago.
