2024-2025 College Football Playoff

Put it in slow motion - not sure he ever makes contact with him.  It looked like he did live so I get why they called it but in reality, I think it was just good defense.  And I am not a fan of anything Notre Dame...
This video is in slow motion and I still think he made contact.  And, the way the WR fell, it makes it look like he was hit pretty hard and that's what probably drew the flag.

OK....this is being debated all day today.  Why isn't this interference?  The DB hits the WR before the ball gets there.  If it weren't intercepted and if the DB hadn't hit him, the ball may have been catchable.  Is it because the ball was touched by a different defender before it got to the receiver? So, it's basically like the ball was tipped at the LOS so no PI?

It’s pretty obvious pass interference and an easy call to make. The dude screaming doesn’t understand football rules.

Two things.  1 he made contact before the ball was there.  2 its face guarding.  He never looks back for the ball which is illegal
You must turn for the ball or you can't really complain.  This would be the #1 thing I'd work on as a DB coach. Similarly, all WR should be taught to fight back through the DB to get the call.

Is face guarding illegal (without contact?)

The contact I see is both putting hands up for a ball, it’s judgment call, but I’ve seen way worse contact not called.

and not that it matters, but I just an opinion in general…I hate how an under thrown ball and receiver can stop a route which creates contact and that is deemed interference. I think the PI is the most out of hand rule in football, but have no idea how to fix it.

Watching it live, it didn't seem like there was a lot there.  But on the replays there is definitely contact, and even a little bit of contact (without any attempt to play the ball) could have prevented the receiver from at least making a play on the ball.

So - while not vicious - I think DPI was the correct call.

Face guarding has not been illegal for nearly two decades.

On one hand, it definitely puts the defense at a disadvantage.

On the other hand, I'd much rather have the judgement be about whether the contact that is there is severe enough or not rather than whether the ball was underthrow enough or not.

Was it pass interference by the letter of the law?  Yes.

But Allar underthrew the ball into triple coverage and was bailed out by a flag on a ball that would not have been caught by his TE.  If #8 fell down at the 15 yard line the ball is picked.

Here is the main TV view.

Yeah, I didn't think it looked all that bad from that view either.  But I think there was more contact than it appears from that view.  And more obvious when a guy is in the air.

But you're right that he definitely got bailed out on a terrible throw.

I completely forgot there was a game last night 🤦‍♂️
Missed a good ol fashion physical game.

Got a bigger game tonight.  If you can, watch in Skyview (no commentators) or ESPN Gamecast (split screen).  Both give you a diff perspective.

Aller was especially bad. I think he attempted 2 passes to a wide receiver all day.  Both dreadful passes that were picked off. Refs bailed him out of the first one.  Not to be too hard on the kid, but he truly blew it for Penn St.
12 completions on short passes to RB or TE.  Maybe one mid range pass to 44/TE.

Against Boise State, he kept throwing sky balls 25 yards downfield and missed badly.  Maybe 7 or 8 times.  And he puts more air under his throws than Dylan Raiola.  It's like he's trying to hit the Goodyear Blimp.  But he is just 20 and should def return next year.

Both those QB were brutal to watch in that game. Riley Leonard or whatever his name is can't hit the broad side of a barn. When that Anjelico kid came in, the first thing I thought is why isn't this the starter?- he has a really live arm that is really accurate.

Drew Allar, however, is on a completely different planet of awful. I have watched probably 3-4 PSU games this year and he is putrid. He has a big arm but is wildly inaccurate. If he is back next year and I were a PSU wide receiver, I would be heading for the transfer portal. That pass he threw to the wide open running back that would have resulted in a crawl speed touchdown was pure Drew Allar- assured he put the ball somewhere that the running back would have to make an awkward catch and he couldn't come up with it- then field goal.

I got my wish on the unimpressive win by Notre Dame. Now they have to do it again against UT or OSU.

GO BIG RED!!!!
