OWH: Husker Camp Countdown

I know I know, this is horrible, but Nebraska, especially with NIL and Rev Sharing and 105 roster...should pretty much NEVER be starting/relying on dudes that were walk-ons.

That is not a diss on walkon and walkon types, that is a diss on the coaches and their misses when it comes to recruiting high level players.

Meh,  having one former walk-on in the rotation (probably playing 15-20 snaps a game) isn’t a problem. Some guys are late bloomers. If the roster was 140 names lasts year that means 55 were walk-ons. To find one contributor out of 55 isn’t a problem.

I am talking more about being a starter.

Some walk on players have been NFL starters.  Not all kids hit their potential at 18 man.
Ha...Of course!

And David Robinson grew 8 inches in college and became one of the best centers ever.  Stuff happens!  I agree

But, go look at the last 10 NC's in CFB and see how many walkons were starters for those teams.

I am just saying that NU should not be looking for and hoping for walkons being starters.  I think we can all agree on that.

So let's look at the 1995 offense.  How many starters were walk on players?  I think we would all be ok with that performance.  I know,  long time ago but still relevant imo.

I honestly have no idea.

But my guess is that the 95 team had maybe 1 walkon starter.  The rest probably had scholarships by the time they were starters.  But I could be totally wrong.

2 on offense and 1 on defense.  So you are saying that a walk-on who earns a scholarship isn't the same?

I do wish that fans would not get so "offended" when people say we don't want to have a bunch of walk-ons starting.

It is not meant to be mean and I totally understand that romanticized version of the small town kid that works so much harder and blah blah blah...

But that is not what NU should be hoping for.

That's not relevant at all IMO. Those guys are going to other schools on scholarships these days to start with. The difference is the quality of walk on then versus now to Nebraska, as 1. Nebraska isn't remotely the same draw as before and 2. It doesn't make sense for a lot of families to pay today's outrageous prices for tuition and walk on when they can get a scholarship at any number of schools and still get similar exposure for transferring later or making the NFL.
