Hmmm. Interesting mix.

5 are transfer players.
3 of them haven't played for the Huskers in a game yet.
5 players are DBs
1 player is in his 7th season.

Sure hope they tackle well, besides coverage and pressure.

The process is undefeated for those who refuse to be defeated...I liked his quick speech on the Blackshirts. Starters get them, don't play mind games with it...
Yeah, same here.

I think it got kind of lame when coaches worried so much about substitution patterns.

I get it, some games you start 2 linebackers instead of 3 because of what the other team is doing. But you still have your starting base defense.

Every DC has their base defense.

He's a ballhawk who's knocking on the door of top 10 all-time career INTs at NU. He got stuck in some unfavorable matchups last year due to injuries. He should just be playing center field back there, and I doubt anyone would complain.
How many big ten teams would he start on? Like 3?

On three of his four INTs last year, he was literally not really covering anyone. The QB just threw a terrible pass that was no where near a WR and hit him in the number. So, great that he made the play, but it wasn't some great play on his part.

He gets in unfavorable matchups because he's not that great and gambles for the big play all of the time. That does lead to some big plays but it also leads to getting burned.

He should be better at safety where he doesn't have to be the only one responsible for covering a single WR as much. Or even at Nickel where he'll have help behind him when he gets burned.

I appreciate the fact that Hartzog has some ball skills. I don't really care how easy the INTs were, we have had solid players who I really like that can't for the life of them come up with an INT even when it's a terrible pass that hits them in the numbers. *cough*Gifford*cough*. So I do like him, he's just more boom or bust than other DBs. But we need more turnovers, and he's one of the guys who has proven to be capable of taking the ones given to him.

But I agree, the reason he was in bad matchups is more due to his size than anything and that's not changing. OCs are smart, you can't hide players - they will find a way to get him matched up against bigger guys at least a few times a game. I'm not losing sleep over him being a blackshirt, I think he's better than the more critical fans believe. But his size is a liability that gets exploited on the regular, and we don't have to handwave that away. I would feel better about the secondary if someone (Jamir Conn?) took his job.

Are you talking about Hartzog?
Honestly, he should not even be playing unless he is covering a short WR. He is limited because of his size.

I mean, this is middle school football logic.

Tall kid covered by short kid. Sooner or later you decide just to toss one up and let the tall kid catch it.

Very surprised Van Poppel didn't get one and isn't even a starter - for all the off season talk up to the past few weeks. Is he even on the team anymore?

Right?

I am telling you, us fans are going to hate the run defense this year. We got spoiled with so many 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 stops last year.

I think we'll be pleasantly surprised. Fewer splash plays for sure. But Lenhardt is a good run defender, all of RVPs opportunities have been as a run-stuffer and he has always shown up, Jaylen George and Elijah Jeudy are grown men - then you just need to see a leap from Nwaneri and/or Davis. I don't think we have a game-wrecker on the DL (yet), and I do worry the lack of size will lead to getting worn down. But I think we'll be decent against the run.
