Rhule to Penn State?

What does Happy Valley gave that Lincoln does not? I mean in general, not Rhule specific. Larger stadium?
Objectively speaking, they have a geographic recruiting advantage. And despite the coaching change I think most college football fans/analysts would say they're in a better position right now to compete for and win championships than Nebraska.

Outside of that, I think they're fairly comparable in revenue generation. I have no idea what their NIL budgets are like given the lack of reporting on those. Nebraska just renovated their football facilities and I don't think Penn St. has updated theirs since 2019 (might be in the works now though with their new renovations? Not sure).

So, I think when you get into the weeds, they have a lot of comparable qualities... but the recent success Penn St. has had plus their geographic recruiting advantage makes most people view them more positively than Nebraska.

God, I can't imagine losing Rhule. I really believe he can turn our program around. If he left, it would literally be starting all over again. A national search, splashing the cash for a new coaching staff, trying to keep all of our commits...we can't keep repeating this cycle. If I'm Dannen, I'm going to Rhule and giving him whatever he asks for. Rhule leaving for Penn State would be absolutely devastating.

State college itself? Not much, its kind of a meh town in the middle of nowhere from the 2 times I've been there.

As far as PSU as a progrum, here's what might be appealing:

  1. Penn state the marquee program in a state with a bunch more people than Nebraska. You're pulling local talent from both Pittsburgh on one side, philly on the other and everywhere else in-between. Closer to more heavily populated areas that you can theoretically recruit from (500 mil radius)
  2. Similar to nebraska, a fan base that expects to be a title contender every year despite not winning a title for 30 years now.
  3. Big stadium, big university, big money available (think this is a wash in my opinion)
  4. new big ten scheduling means you're not getting your a$$ kicked by ohio state and michigan every year. Now you get to get your a$$ kicked by maybe one of those 2 or oregon.
  5. Talented roster- this will prolly change with whoever the new coach is but the roster as we know it today has talent.
Honestly, the only reason this is a talking point is because of rhule's specific background. I think Rhule being recognized as a consensus top candidate is proof enough that this isnt that great of a job despite what penn state and big ten brass what you to think. If I'm a cignetti type candidate with no personal tie that Florida job is substantially more attractive than penn state, a few other potential openings also look more appealing than PSU.

sounds like he really wants Rhule. i believe that describes him pretty well.
Yes that is what I thought too. But Rhule seemed pretty high on sticking with Nebraska in his press conference. But we know how that typically goes in these things - kind of head fake and next thing we know he's being announced at PSU.

Maybe it is just me but losing Rhule would not bother me one bit.

He seems like a nice guy and everything but like, is anyone totally blown away by anything he has done?
Certainly not blown away, but I think given the general state of things around here since 2014, this is the first time in a long time that anyone has felt overly good about the program. They've improved in the areas we've been harping for years that they need to get better (e.g. special teams) and they're finding ways to win games against decent competition.

Of course, that could all feel hollow this week if they lay an egg against Minnesota. And who knows... Nebraska going 10-2 feels about as likely as 7-5. I think if they go 7-5 this year he isn't going to Penn St. and none of us feel that passionate about losing him lol a lot of season left to play either way.

After years of feeling dejected about the program, I almost welcome the "10-2 and could we lose our coach???" concerns... it would feel a hell of a lot better than the conversations we've been having for a decade.

He's taken us up from the doormat. When he got here, the program was in a bad position. He luckily convinced Dylan to sign, and has done well to put together the coaching and support staff to put our program in a great position to excel. I think we're having a different conversation had he not signed Dylan two years ago, but he did and has recruited well since then.

Can other coaches do the same thing with carrying on success? Sure, but there are no guarantees. If he leaves, it becomes a matter of which coaches and staff go with him and then which players follow along. Currently, we have continuity and unity among the staff, coaches, players, etc. Take the head coach out of the equation and that all gets disrupted.

The bold: You got UF, FSU, SCar - these alone may be better options. Maybe not South Carolina unless you want to be in the south's recruiting area and build something. Good chance UF and FSU come available.

I think he’s gone after the regular season. It sucks to do this all over again, but whatever.

I think there’s several examples of coaches doing more with less than Rhule. Let’s be the first to snag one of those guys.

He can’t take the social media video crew with him.

After having watched his comments at the presser -
He didn’t say he wouldn’t leave Nebraska for Penn St, he said the opposite just without actually saying it. He’s not leaving Nebraska in season was what I got out of it.
If he’s absolutely 100% not, you would just go ahead and make that statement right now and not have that distraction the rest of the season and have that b******t used against you in recruiting also. Easy to do really.
But he didn’t…our had AD better figure out how to fix our lack of NIL sooner than later
