USC: What Did We Learn

Honestly, our secondary holds on nearly every play and get away with it a lot. We can't cover without holding. It will catch up sooner or later. Should have last weekend, and if we keep doing it, film doesn't lie, and the calls will get made against us. Officiating had nothing to do with this loss, but overall, sucks in all of college football.

This your first time watching us this season? Well, turns out we have a pretty elite secondary. 2nd in the nation in pass defense, and 12th in total defense.

Not sure if you know this, but they have some really Texasing good running backs.
I'd say 2010 Nebraska was an elite secondary. This pass defense has some of the worst pass rush in recent memory and almost no yield to a good rush defense.

Without Emmett Johnson, we would be 0fer in the Big 10. Image if he had a good line to run behind! We have yet to win a big 10 game in the trenches. Until this is fixed, winning will be tough!

If I hadn’t watched the game and I just read your comment, I might’ve thought he had 230 yards rushing and and 3 TD’s.

But he had 129 yards.

I’d agree that we underperformed in rush defense…but didn’t we already know that was our weakness?

Raiola got hurt early in the third quarter and that was game. Our defense did fairly well honestly.

I don’t know how you could make a different assessment given that they only scored 21 on offense.
7.2 ypc

That’s the problem. EJ looked amazing and he had 5.7. There’s only been 1 game in big ten play where we’ve held the opposing leading rusher to under 5.5 ypc.

When you extend a coach who has not yet beaten a ranked opponent and is 6-3 with a favorable schedule, it just promotes complacency. Rhule will be very rich even if fired, so what is the motivation to make the right hires and do your best to do what Cignetti has done at Indiana. Completely understand the Cignetti extension. The guy is a winner. The Rhule extension makes zero sense. He has always been a 0.500 coach all his career and that is not going to change. You are what your record says you are. 2-24 against ranked opponents. This is exactly what we are getting. Other than that, Rhule is an excellent sales person. He definitely says the right things and he is not going to pull a Bo on the field. May be our administration thinks this is worth the money.
Better version of Mike Riley. Should have just kept him and we wouldn't have lived the Frost experiment. Seriously, we are in no better position now than in 2016. Still can not win games that matter. This starts with not scheduling Houston Christian and Akron. Challenge your team in August and early September, take a loss against better teams in order to improve going into November. We get punched in the mouth in late October and lose in November.

Fully agree. We would likely be 4-5 right now without EJ. I honestly think he has more potential than Abdullah in the NFL.
He isn't quick enough. He is not a straight line runner. Too herky jerky on some runs. When he puts his foot down and runs, he is a great runner, but sometimes to much side ways movement.

You should probably learn what a secondary is.
I know what comprises a pass defense. You can keep the guardrails really tight to protect a narrative.

We're undefeated after 1st quarters against USC this year.

How is this elite secondary yielding effectiveness in overall defense and winning huge games?

I had USC by 14-17 tonight so not too displeased as the L sits for some time now.

THis is where I am at. Excellent CEO, face of the program, recruiter etc...He needs to get some serious talent in for his OC/DC and build from there. Better or worse, we have Rhule for another 7 years....And a crap ton of $ to buy guys if we keep this staff and they can't develop talent.

It just pisses me off that we wasted another time out to try to draw them offsides with a 2nd string freshman QB. The most predictable play in that situation was used to burn a 2nd timeout in a tight game that is very likely going to come down to the final possession.

Oh dude…I agree with this. Totally agree about the timeout.

I understand the point you’re driving at. But also, what the f*** does YPC wind up really meaning to the outcome if they only put up 21 points?

Remember, we forced two field goals and they went for two on one touchdown. They got into the end zone only two times.

I do think we lack an inside linebacker prescience though. That wasn’t good.
