UCLA- What Did We Learn

We're pretty much down to Barney, Key and Hunter at WR. Clark, Mills and Smith combined for 13 snaps.

Interesting that Barney seems to be the play-maker but consistently gets the fewest snaps (of the top three). And Key hasn't done a ton despite usually having the most snaps.

UCLA's whole offense was QB scrambles. It was like a prettier version of the Cincinnati game against a crappier opponent.

We've matched last year's win total with (probably) three games left to play. We're currently at .571 in conference play. In each of the previous three seasons, we finished .333.

The big story in this one was how well Lateef did. He scanned the field arguably as well as Raiola has this season

Well, I think part of it is Holgorsen getting away from plays that have 2 or 3 reads. With Lateef, it was more like 'make your primary read, and if it ain't there make something happen with your feet'.

And the part where UCLA's main game plan appeared to be "leave Johnson open."

I rewatched some of the game. I think d-line was decent. Are our ends and linebackers slow?

I rewatched part of the game, too. This has been my thinking for a few weeks. DL stands up their guys, and at times, the LBs are way too slow to react to the run. I remember one play that was about an 8-yard run where our LBs were flat-footed, by the time they reacted, the RB was past the line, and they got caught up in the wash. If they react quicker, it is a 2-yard game at best. Our DL has gotten better. They need to get better, but so do the LBs. But the LBs are also banged up.

If you take out the good offenses we have played, then we have only played bad offenses.
And on top of that, every year from 2009 until now, some team(s) has gotten over 400 yards on the team even if they weren't the best offenses.

We held a prolific USC offense to 21 points. The week before #10 Notre Dame held them to 24. Week after our game they put up 38 on NW.

The offense lost the last game and especially the MN game.

It's crazy what the stats say and what we "look" like and our record. Dylan 5th most TD passes in the B1G (missed 1.5 games), EJ and his rushing prowess (most yard by RB in P4, tied 5th in TD's, 8th in RB receiving and most in all purpose), defense holding teams to season lows in points, yards etc, but have 3 losses (2 to ranked teams) and playing better than 2009 D (Can't remember specific stat). How the hell do we have these amazing stats that would generally point to a playoff team, but here we are. Mind boggling. And other the meltdown at minny are other 2 ranked team losses were 1 score losses....

Huskers have held all 10 opponents under 400 yards for the first time since 2009.

#ButlerSucks
Are you related to Butler. You defend him like he is your father. I am sure you are watching the games. Our defense did not play well yesterday and in several other games. They get completely owned by a mobile QB. King miller of USC carved them like a Christmas turkey. You can throw all the stats you want. Butler is not that good.

USC score 21 against NU. Their season low.

The offense lost that game.

And the MN game were they put up all of 6 points.

I am still not convinced that Butler is a good coach. Keep in mind that our schedule this season has not been that hard. We are not playing Indiana, Ohio state, or Oregon. So, how much of the stats are a byproduct of our opponents versus how good our D is. Watching them yesterday, they were getting gutted by UCLA’s QB. We held on to the win because our offense was able to get some first downs and drain the clock. Had UCLA got the back ball, I doubt our D would have been able to stop them. However, I am also not saying that our offense has been killing it. The Minny game was atrocious but that was because Rhule insisted on keeping Raiola even after seeing he kept being sacked. I am happy with the win and really excited about the possibilities. I am hopeful that defense keeps improving and offense keeps scoring.

Our 3rd and long and 4th down D is the worst. I don't know if they are switching up the D or just sucking at making plays. They had the opportunity to get off the field with multiple 3rd and 10+ yard downs. You would think statistically the D would stop them or the offenses not be able to convert them.

That's been a year long frustration some stat guy could look at further. It seems they are more likely to stop 3rd and 5 or less than 3rd and 8 or more. Which makes no sense.

Butler is not that good? I call BS.

8th game this year his defense has held an opponent to 7 points or fewer by half-time. Do you know how incredible that is? I guess not.

I understand there is some running game deficiencies. Maybe it has to do with playing against good running backs and/or talented mobile QBs.

Butler's defense isn't perfect, but it has been playing very well while using the personnel he has to work with. Sometimes the difference is the Jimmy's and Joe's.

And the 3-3-5 was kept to keep continuity & familiarity with a defense that lost valuable assets within the front 7.

I'd say cut him some slack and appreciate how good this defense has been, especially since the goal is to limit points as much as possible.

We lost two very close games to good ranked teams. We had one 💩 of a game against still a decent team. We are 7-3.

If we could have made just a couple more plays against USC, we would still be in the playoff discussion.

We aren’t national championship level. But, we aren’t as bad as you claim we are sometimes.
