UCLA- What Did We Learn

My complaints for less than stellar performances doesn't diminish my joy in watching them play. Win or lose I'm in. Not a fan only when we are winning.

That is exactly how I feel. I am always happy when we win regardless of whether it is an ugly win or not. We are definitely improving from previous years. We are committing less penalties, our special teams are special, we have a running back that is a first round draft pick. I see all that. I doubt anyone is blind to this. But we should be allowed to also point the obvious. We are porous against the run and sometimes we cannot find a way to get off the field. The 14 play drive UCLA had was demoralizing. Their QB was able to get first and 11 and first and 13. Last week King Miller was only stopped by Riley who stopped calling the run plays. Tackling has been suspect at times. Having said that, had we beaten USC last week, we would be in the playoff conversation, which is more than we could have said in the past years. I just feel that we are all a little tired of the moral victories and we want that elusive next step…beat a ranked opponent, win a game when you are a huge underdog. I wonder how we would fair against Ohio state, Indiana or Oregon.
For now, all I want for Christmas is to spank Iowa on Black Friday. That would make this season a good success.

Who is Berger- he seemed to get a fair amount of time on the defensive line. They referenced him briefly as being a transfer and not having much eligibility left?

If you're going based on the TV announcers, they probably got mixed up with the UCLA running back. Jaylen George would be the transfer that is almost out of eligibility, but I don't think he played much. Gabe Moore is another transfer getting a decent amount of playing time (including at least one nice play Saturday), but he's a redshirt freshman. The German kid, Hoffken, is playing more. I guess Jeudy counts as a transfer?

So no idea who they were talking about, but there are definitely some guys playing now that weren't at the start of the year. I understand we don't want to mess with what's working, but I wouldn't mind seeing some of the 2nd team CBs (Jeremiah Charles, Amare Sanders) in the last couple games just to see what they can do.

Yes, they might get 100 fans to show up for their games. That game was almost like a home game for Nebraska with how our fans showed up. SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF THOSE CALIFORNIA HUSKERS who made it to the game.

I noticed that too. He sure made a quick "I'm out of here". Maybe he didn't want to ask a QB controversy question or 'Why did you call that time out?"
 
I learned that there's a huge tailgate party north of the Rose Bowl on the golf course. It's different from the huge tailgate party on the south side where we bummed some food from nice Husker fans and polite Bruin fans. The north side tailgate had THOUSANDS of UCLA students partying in tents, with a roughly 60:40 female ratio that my Cal Poly son and has buddy -- all of us in Husker colors -- really appreciated.

Game time and the east side of the Rose Bowl is 75% red, with red clusters throughout the rest of the crowd. The east side is where the band and student section supposedly sit. The student section is half empty at kickoff and almost totally empty by the fourth quarter. Which means thousands of those UCLA tailgaters never bothered to attend the game.

The Husker Rose Bowl takeover is part of the story and UCLA fans are openly humiliated. Some talk about how well Husker fans travel, but the fact is that most of the Husker supporters are Southern California transplants, or come from sorta nearby places like Arizona or up in the Bay Area like me. When I was coming back from the bathroom and heard a big cheer, I knew something good had happened for Nebraska. That's pretty crazy for a road game, and maybe we should be thankful this loyalty is still a thing given our recent poor fortunes and the crabby bastards who gum up the Game Day Thread.

There was also a big Anime Convention in Pasadena this weekend, and the street interactions between groups of swag clad Husker fans and young people dressed for Japanese cosplay were pretty delightful.
