PSU - What Did We Learn?

Big 10 football is down right now. With the exception of Ohio ST, Indiana, and Oregon. They are in a different class. Now is the time to make that next move before Michigan figures thing out again, and teams like Wisky figure things again. The pecking order is coming once again. Penn St if they hire the right guy will be back in a couple of years, if not next season. This next season will define where we stand once again. Its a huge make or break season in where this program is heading. Team that are better than us: USC, Washington, Illinois, Michigan, Penn ST, and Iowa but are in the same tier. Teams like Oregon and Ohio St are different level. Where do you see us going amongst those teams like Illinois? Can we improve enough to beat them, and gain ground on Oregon and Ohio ST?

What I have noticed this season is coaches like Rhule, Klieman at KSU, Leipold at KU, and others that are builders can not get the right pieces in the portal and don't want too. They think that they can still build a program from ground up and maintain winning. I do feel that needs to be a focus, but you have to go get impact players to fill voids immediately. Dabo at Clemson has bucked the portal and now is .500 this season. What built Rhule was being a program builder. This era that needs to happen quicker. You have to get the right players from the start. Handcuffing yourself to a QB and his family is also a downfall. Our o-line has not shown any improvement since Donovan has been here. Zero. At some point, that has to change. If we are sacrificing that position to keep Dylan, then move on next season and take your chances on TJ. This would improve the offense I feel overnight.

I watch the games on YoutubeTV so I can have 4 screens of football on and maybe catch a good game on one of the screens. Last night there weren't any good games. Tennesee/Florida and Penn State/Nebraska were crap games.

Wisconsin beating Illinois wasn't bad. I thought Michigan State was going to get Iowa.

Iowa plays up or down to their opponents.

Stating this again. Portal players that make impacts want a playoff contender. Ask yourself are we a playoff contender next season? With that schedule, we are not. We can have all the NIL money in the world, but bottom line is winning and beating Oregon and Ohio St. This current roster needs more than just a couple of pieces to compete nationally next season.

So you don't believe a 19 - 22 year old young guy is heavily influenced to come to a team if he's offered more money there than he would be at a better team?

I'd have to disagree with that.

iowa will need to come down quite a bit to match our brand of football

It was actually cringe-worthy listening to the announcers effusively praising NU's elite pass defense.

Nebraska's pass defense is not elite. The scheme (it doesn't work) coupled with the talent is bottom half of the B1G. Some statistician will come in and tell me "look at the numbers." I just watch the games. If the pass D is so shutdown, you have freedom to stack boxes to better stop the run. We don't stop either.

4-6 Penn State dismantled us last night. It was watching a Varsity team play a JV team. It was Minnesota all over but with 4+ stars everywhere in navy blue.

Glancing at the schedule for next year, it's ugly. We have IU, Oregon, and OSU. We start with seven home games and end with five straight on the road. We very well might lose three home games, including the final two (OSU and Washington) before the five game road game streak.

Unless DRASTIC changes are made, the ceiling next year is six wins. I'd bet on a four or five win season.

Opponent Venue Result (Prediction)
Ohio --- H --- W
Bowling Green --- H --- W
North Dakota --- H --- W
Indiana --- H --- L
Maryland --- H --- W
OSU --- H --- L
Washington --- H --- L
Illinois --- A --- L
Iowa --- A --- L
MSU --- A --- 50/50
Oregon --- A --- L
Rutgers --- A --- 50/50

If Maryland somehow beats us at home next year, it's possible to lose nine straight games.
Our "elite" passing status was bolstered by the fact that butler accepted that we could drop db's into coverage and to help with the theory that a few running gashes is better than chunk pass plays.. His attempt to stop the run and keep db,s in the box last night failed miserably... No pressure, didn't stop the run and handed Ethan a 91% pass completion.

I disagree too. Sure elite programs are going to still get good talent but if we can pay an OT to come here for more money vs sitting on the bench at OSU then we have to do that in today’s environment. Look at Texas Tech, Exhibit A. I’m not saying I like it but it is what it is. Saban basically said I’m out now and Dabo is learning a hard lesson. It’s the Wild West and we have to pony up to play for big stakes.

We can all agree there have been improvements from Frost, but that isn't saying literally anything at all. I haven't seen enough in year 3 to convince me he can do it, so I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask that question after year 3. I think that question is in everyone's mind, some still have it in the back/subconscious but it's there. It doesn't take a good coach 4 full years to really start making a difference on the field.

We'll know early next year if this is ever going to work or not.

Well said. I really think Nebraska needs to get to 9 or 10 wins next year to convince folks that Rhule is the right man for this job. That is going to be a tall order with their difficult schedule, but 3-plus years is a long enough time for a coach to make a significant impact. The fact that both lines have been weak for over a decade is mind boggling and I would have expected Rhule to understand how important the trenches are to winning in the BIG.

They went after skill players. Look at all the 4* plus QBs and WR they chase and pick up.. But the team would be better using their money playing 3* QBs behind 4 and 5* linemen. This year has shown they need depth. Especially at tackle.

Yesterday, during their game, the announcers mentioned Miami's starting line averages 6'-6" and 335lbs. Nebraska's starters were 6'-5" and 319lbs before the injuries took out 2 of them.

I'd rather they aim higher than Wisconsin or Iowa

  • Historically, Nebraska’s linemen recruits have averaged around 5.65 on Rivals.com’s scale, placing them in the mid-three-star range, which is nearly identical to Wisconsin’s 5.64 and Iowa’s 5.61 over the same period.

I learned that this year's Iowa loss won't be a 10-13 walk off FG win for Iowa. This team is going to hang 50 on us, laugh while they do it and chastise us for another fkn year. I'm tired of it. Fix this problem, now. Texas Tech bought a team so I am out of excuses, Texas Freaking Tech.
