Portal QBs

Kinda like this guy? (Although he is probably following Campbell)

I think so…he’s kind of small, he’s not going to be durable enough to do a lot of designed keepers - but that’s not what I’d want to see anyway, like I was saying. But yes, that’s the basic mold.

You look at that guy and you see that Matt Campbell was pretty good developing players; I know high school recruit rankings are not much of a science, but Rocco was a three star coming out of high school.

Now he’s a four star as a transfer. Sees the field pretty well from what I’ve seen.

Aiden Chiles really does suck. He’s a crappier version of Tommy Armstrong. He’s bordering on “Jeff Sims all over again.”

Hoping this chatter is just dudes on Twitter trying to get clicks on their no-name accounts and we’re not really going to go after him.

At that rate you should just not bring anybody in except a backup for TJ and put TJ in a mindset where he’s the guy for 2026 (but I think that’s a losing proposition anyway).

TJ is also a bit small but I think he has a lot of potential for 2027 if he redshirts next year.

It’s starting to feel like Rhule wants a bruiser QB, which as I said, I think is a big mistake. But we’ll see.

My personal opinion- hard pass on Aidan Chiles. I watched some MSU prior to the NU game and he wasn't good- terrible accuracy and he wasn't all that dangerous with the run. The kid that replaced him with, the kid with the eastern European sounding name, that kid has arm talent that could be harvested.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the formula for Nebraska and roughly 85% of college football teams is to grab a QB who doesn't have the numbers but was under-utilized or out of his scheme and comes in with a lot to prove, including the understanding that he will have to compete for the job. History suggests there are plenty of those guys out there, but every one is a risk. For that matter, Sorsby is a risk because there's no compelling evidence he's better than Dylan Raiola. Yet he'd arrive high-priced and feeling entitled.

In our case that means keeping Lateef and assuring him it's his job to lose. If a portal QB looks better than Lateef next fall, there we are. We gotta be both clever and lucky.

I can't help but think Matt Rhule would have had a much better start if he'd gone with anyone but Jeff Sims and Hendrick Haarberg for that first season.

I mean, he coulda just went with Casey Thompson. It was pretty much the default option. But for whatever reason he chased him away...

He specifically named Georgia Tech's Haynes King as the kinda guy he'd like (2700 yards passing, 900 rushing, ACC Player of the Year). Do you consider him a 'bruiser'?

(Side note: perhaps not entirely a coincidence that we just hired Georgia Tech's o-line coach.)

The bold there is a good summary. There's luck to it, but you also have to almost play a game of poker with your players. You can't let them see what you've got in your hand before the portal window closes on January 16.

One major hurdle now is, you can't sell your team on the idea of an "open competition for the starting spot" anymore. Because players in the spectrum of "decent" to "great" are extremely likely to transfer if they think they're not guaranteed a starting spot for the next season.

Harder to develop players with that dynamic; you can't just force everybody to compete like you could for decades.

A point worth remembering.
3 things can happen when you pay big bucks for a portal QB.
1) There's an implied promise he'll be the starter ... that can hurt team chemistry. It's like at any job, if someone comes into an organization and is givin something that others have worked for ... well ...
2) If you pay the big $$$, as a coach you'll feel obligated to start him because otherwise you'll like an idiot who wasted money. That bias could mean a coach overlooking a better fit for the offense.
3) He could be a dream come true and lead you to the playoffs.

I saw the quote from Rhule.

At 6'3", 215 lbs. he is obviously not a bruiser in terms of size. So, you didn't even need to bother asking that question. Guy was however extremely tough and had a mean run game. He was super physical.

I find it incredibly unlikely that NU lands a player of King's caliber out of the portal though, just going to be honest. At this point I think it's very fair to say that you have to throw out almost anything that Rhule says and just watch what he actually does. I predict Rhule will wind up with a bruiser QB who can't throw well, regardless of what he says in interviews.

...but that's not what I want to happen. There's a difference between the two things.

Matt could sell a hairbrush to bald guy.

I understand a lot of husker fans would have a problem with Chiles and yes he regressed this year but he looked good for the early part of last year for Michigan State. I don't know if he lost confidence or it was the play calling this year. I would say he is way better than Jeff Sims but that's not saying much.
