Portal QBs

Among the names being linked to Nebraska that people are tossing out, it would appear that we are not going to over spend on that guaranteed starter but rather bring in a guy to compete with TJ. Depends on where you stand on TJ as a starter will dictate how you feel about this strategy.

I think bringing in a guaranteed start in would be crazy, simply because if you bring in someone who is guaranteed the spot, then TJ is most likely going to enter the portal and here we are again with a guy who only has spring ball to figure out the offense. With nobody behind him if he gets hurt.

If we bring a guy in and he competes and beats out TJ then hopefully TJ stays around knowing he’ll be the guy his jr and sr year knowing he’s the start, and the 27 freshmen recruit can develop into a starter.

Of course you want it to be a competition, and if TJ beats him out great. We all know how it goes now though. If TJ loses out and leaves that wouldn't be shocking. May stick around for the year but after that who knows. Trae is the future. Just trying to fill the gap to that point.

Good grief, people are way overthinking this. You take the best guy you can get, period. If there's a guy out there that you think is currently better than TJ, and you can get him, then you take him! If TJ does end up transferring, oh well, you've already got a better QB. Cross that bridge when you come to it.

I mean we all knew there was a high probability that TJ would end up transferring the day he committed to us, because even if he stuck around he was probably only looking at a year or two as a starter post-Dylan.

The only real complicating factor is money. If you don't want to pay two QBs at once who command relatively large dollars, and you'd rather spend extra on the rest of the roster, that's not an unreasonable strategy.

A point worth remembering.
3 things can happen when you pay big bucks for a portal QB.
1) There's an implied promise he'll be the starter ... that can hurt team chemistry. It's like at any job, if someone comes into an organization and is givin something that others have worked for ... well ...
2) If you pay the big $$$, as a coach you'll feel obligated to start him because otherwise you'll like an idiot who wasted money. That bias could mean a coach overlooking a better fit for the offense.
3) He could be a dream come true and lead you to the playoffs.

I'm sure there are plenty of example in college football, but this made me think of my San Francisco 49ers.

In 2022 they had:
Jimmy Garappalo -- signed a huge contract and led them to the Super Bowl
Trey Lance -- Niners moved up in the draft to get him the year before, fully intending to replace Garappalo while Garappalo was still on the team. Awkward.
Brock Purdy -- last player chosen in the draft. One of the assistant coaches liked his maturity as a four year starter on one team.
Some other QB who started the year ahead of Purdy.

Looking out over this mess of money, egos, injuries and expectations, Kyle Shanahan realized his best quarterback was the last round rookie working out with the practice squad.

So in addition to being clever and lucky, coaches (and GMs) need to set their egos aside if the quarterback they married isn't as hot as the kid who flew under the radar.

I saw the quote from Rhule.

At 6'3", 215 lbs. he is obviously not a bruiser in terms of size. So, you didn't even need to bother asking that question. Guy was however extremely tough and had a mean run game. He was super physical.

I find it incredibly unlikely that NU lands a player of King's caliber out of the portal though, just going to be honest. At this point I think it's very fair to say that you have to throw out almost anything that Rhule says and just watch what he actually does. I predict Rhule will wind up with a bruiser QB who can't throw well, regardless of what he says in interviews.

...but that's not what I want to happen. There's a difference between the two things.

Matt could sell a hairbrush to bald guy.
So please, explain what you consider a "bruiser"..?? give us an example of who you feel our "hairbrush salesman" will target...

You've kind of been going after my posts in the last few days. You accused me of being "argumentative," and when I asked you really nicely to provide a specific example of where that had been the case, I didn't hear back from you.

Maybe this is just a byproduct of there not really being that many active members & posts on this board these days; there just isn't that much discussion happening, period.

Like I said, Haynes King was an extremely tough player with a mean run game. But he's not exactly built like Josh Allen or Jeff Sims. I understand why you're pressing me on this though - it's because of a quite benign comment that I made about what kind of a QB I predict we'll wind up with.

The punchline on Haynes King though is that almost any school that's in the market for a QB out of the portal would take a player like him. The guy was amazing. He was a rare talent where he was actually a real threat as both a runner and a passer.

So, it's not all that informative of a statement from Rhule; we can't glean much from him saying he'd like to grab a QB like King because like, who wouldn't? Know what I mean?

Bro’s a troll.

So yes, not going after YOU.. Your posts tend to.... meander a bit...

So do you or do you not understand what I conveyed there about Haynes King?

He's an extremely physical runner regardless of how anybody would classify his build. And on top of that, he was basically an elite passer. Almost any team in the country not named Oregon or Indiana would probably take Haynes King if he had another year of eligibility and was entering the portal - and maybe even a school of their caliber would take him.

Thus, it's really not that much of an informative statement by Rhule in my opinion - other than to say that he wants a guy that can run the ball - which I felt like I already knew. He made an exception for Raiola because Raiola was a five star recruit.

No meandering here.

yes, I do.. but the conversation at hand was that you thought Rhule would bring in a "bruiser", I'm still a bit fuzzy what YOU consider a "bruiser" QB. that's why I asked for examples.

I’m leery of anyone moving down. Like demoting from a SEC team or similar. Sure, there are exceptions- like Trey Palmer, but it seems like someone who couldn’t cut it at an elite level or who is a mental mess.

Lots of NFL talent got their start at community colleges. Recruiting stars and Power 4 creds don't tell the whole story.

Like I said, gonna have to be both clever and lucky.
