Rob ... Huskernumerouno

I'm watching Dinner: Impossible on the Food Network (Don't flame Drowning, I know you dig it too),

and the Chef is cooking dinner for like 1,000 Marines, giving them there "warrior" meal before they ship...

at the end, one of the officers shakes Chef Robert Irvine's hand, and in his hand, he has a coin which he slips him...

this got me thinking, a year or two ago I was on a flight back to Omaha, and there was an older officer on his way home, speaking to a young Marine whose aquaintance he had just met. He handed him a similiar coin. Was just curious what exactly these are?

I am not a Marine, but the Army has the same things.

Usually a Battalion Commander or higher (Lt Col and up) have coins made with the command's logo on it, and they give these coins for special recognition for a job well done.

Sometimes they are given to Soldiers or Marines when a higher award (Medals) are not appropriate, or they are given for on the spot recognition when the issuance of a medal may take a long time.

hope that helps you out

Just a short story on one of those coins. My new chief is a retired Lt. Col. from the Army. One of our dispatchers sons has just left for Iraq. My chief has a bunch of different coins, challenge coins, on his desk from different areas he has worked in. He gave one of these coins to this young man and told him that when he came back that coin was redeemable for one welcome home party. It was really cool on the Chief's part. We also have these coins for the Metro S.T.A.R. Team. If you don't have your coin with you when any member of the S.T.A.R. Team asks you to present it the next time everyone goes out you have to buy everyone a beer.
