Leadership lesson

The spotlight had been on Nebraska's defensive line long before Monday's news about the dismissal of backup tackle Kevin Dixon.

Everybody will continue to keep a close watch on the progression of this unit, which some within the program believe will be better than many people think. We'll see.

For sure, a leader is needed up front, so I found it interesting yesterday when junior Ndamukong Suh addressed the topic of leadership. Suh, remember, sat out spring practices with a knee injury. He had surgery in March. (On a side note, Suh said he was pleasantly surprised -- you might even say shocked -- when Nebraska's athletic director, Tom Osborne, called Suh to see how his surgery went. "I mean, he's the athletic director. He didn't have to do that," Suh said.)

Back to leadership ... Suh said he's been talking recently with former Husker defensive linemen Christian Peter and Jason Peter ... about the past Blackshirt tradition, about what they expect now, about what Suh can do to help.

“I definitely feel that I have a good understanding of how things have worked and how things can be turned around," Suh said. “They really just want me to play as hard as I can, just like they played."

Suh said the Peters told him they see him as a leader on the 2008 defense. Suh said he wants to be a leader, and that he feels some of his teammates look up to him.

The Peters' advice?

"Take that to your full advantage. Don’t be a guy that just dictates people but be a likeable guy at the same time. Don’t let people stray.

“The main thing is, internally, take care of problems. If there’s anything going on ... Take care of it as a team before it gets to the coaches.”

Oz calling hurt guys> that was part of the old program......we are now getting it back, after cally and his bullsh#t ways......

leadership? well, we can only hope that something will be learned from the old players, because there was nothing left over from last years' players, thanks in part to the coaching.....assuming there was some??

TO is just that way. I remember when I was a kid. My mom took us to Memorial Stadium. It was the first time I'd ever been there. TO saw us and came over and talked to us. That's just the way he is. I think the entire athletic department will be much more laid back than with the previous dictator.

Suh is a very intelligent young man. After all, the biggest reason he came to Nebraska was for an eductions specifically in Engineering. I like this kid and I hope he has a smashing year!

These are the types of burned bridges that I was hoping would be rebuilt as Pelini's career here began again. That whole "play for the guys who came before you" tool is made a little more useful if you know who they are and can point them out on the sideline cheering you on.

Way to go Suh.

It's great to see that our guys are talking with former players and trying to get things back on track. We definately lacked leadership last season so it will be nice to see it on the field this season. :clap

i just hope suh can live up to his name...what...i want him to be a house of spears...
exactly.

he needs to be both sides of the presidential seal...the olive branch and the spears.
