Quick notes

Just some highlights from the press conference for those who couldn't listen:

* Bo Pelini said Sean Fisher and Alfonzo Dennard are two true freshmen who have the best opportunity to play Saturday.

* Juco transfer offensive linemen Ricky Henry, not listed on the two-deep, is definitely a redshirt candidate.

* Tight end Hunter Teafatiller will not play Saturday, presumably serving a one-game suspension. Pelini said he would return the following week.

* Team captains will be elected on a week-by-week basis, with a vote by the players. However, this week's captains, to be announced tomorrow, are of the coaches' choosing.

* Ted Gilmore will be Joe Ganz' "go-to" coach on the sideline with Shawn Watson in the press box.

* Don't expect Blackshirts to be awarded anytime soon. Perhaps not even this week.

* Niles Paul and Larry Asante will return kickoffs. Nate Swift will start at punt return; Paul will likely see some punt returns as well.

Strange. Dennard has the best chance to play and he's not listed on the depth chart just released.

When did Asante (SS) become a top choice to return kicks? Did I miss something or am I alone on that?

I know he has been working on it during practices, but I'm not sure why Mendoza or Culbert didnt get that opportunity. I guess I didnt realize he was a burner with ball handling skills. :dunno

I am excited though to see how he does.

Some of that info is surprising. Some of the camp chatter said Henry was most definitely going to get quality PT, Teafatiller was going to be suspended for 3 games, Paul was going to be the #1 punt returner and you see here that Dennard is not listed on the depth chart, but likely to play. Is Pelini playing games when he made the depth chart like Callahan did? It would certainly appear so, unless quite a bit has changed in the past few days.

I thought that I read that while Henry was hitting people and hitting people hard, he still didn't know the play book or what exactly to do on plays. A redshirt would be good for him with our depth along the line.

I had some similar thoughts about that too Dawg. I think he just wants to start the game & go from there.

I've read numerous quose from Sanders saying that Alfonzo Dennard will probably be redshirting. He has all the physical tools but he hasn't quite grasped the mental aspect of it yet. What happened to that?? These coaches are good at blowing smoke up our asses.

Actually, listed were Nate Swift, Todd Peterson, Niles Paul, Menelik Holt, Curenski Gilleylen, Will Henry, and Chris Brooks at the two WR spots. A little more than just the two deep. I wonder if Cooper will be a RS candidate, despite the risk of him leaving after 3 years.
