Scary statistic

HuskerNMO

All-Conference
VT has as many rushing CARRIES (55) as we did yards rushing.

VT averaged 19 yards per reception.

Our offense only converted 2-11 third downs

3rd down is where games are won and lost. We did not convert many and it only seemed to be late in the game that we stopped VT on 3rd down. We have to be able to convert 3rd downs on offense and get the stops on defense. Not getting a turnover tonight also hurt us. VT put the ball on the turf at least twice from what I recall and each time we could not recover it. The Ganz INT deep in our own territory killed us and was huge for VT getting the win. 3rd down's and turnovers...we need to win in these stats to contend with Mizzou, T Tech, and OU to even have a shot at these type of opponents.

Yet we almost pulled it off. Every game is subjective to these kind of comparisons. What does it REALLY say?
I think it says put Lucky into 3rd and long situations as a passing back, and start Helu for everything else. With the O-line not run-blocking the way it is, I doubt it matters, but just my .02

What we already figured out...we sucked tonight. :sarcasm
Yeah, no kidding.

I know that people will still say that we sucked. Rediculous. I am proud of this team.

Edit: Sorry, but we have to start from the ground up.

Well, one and three are indicative of our inability to run the ball and keep our defense off the field.

#2 is pointing out that VT gained big chunks of yardage in the passing game when they didn't block well (Taylor slipped away from at least 4 sacks and made either a long completion or scramble).

This also makes another game later in the year (Baylor) look scary with their qb's mobility.

the defense also couldn't force any turnovers. i think this ties into the fact that VT had higher caliber athletes on the field that have the ability to step up and make big plays more often than our guys. Bottom line is that effort and heart will have to make up for our lower talent level if we want to compete with high caliber teams this season and probably a few seasons to come. The huskers played hard tonight but the cards just didnt fall our way. Bo will keep them playing hard, so as fans we need to be patient and let Bo make the best of what we've got

I agree. Helu just has a style that creates things from nothing. Every running play he's in, there just seems to be more potential. However, it's tough for Marlon when there's no holes.

Defensively, IIRC, I think we had only a couple of 3-and-outs - One mid first qtr and another in the fourth.

I still stand by the fact that we are going to finish the season 7-5 or 8-4 at best. This team is growing up in front of us right now. This loss will definately test the character of this team and we will see how they respond now against Missouri. It sucks that we lost, but we all knew a loss of some sort was going to come here in the next month or so with our schedule getting much tougher. It doesn't make the loss any easier, but this team actually has fire and passion and I love seeing that. Some things that need to change IMO is the secondary needs to figure it out and in short order. You have a possible Heisman winner with one hell of an offense coming to town and that figures out to not be good! The offense has looked sluggish to me this entire season and has never truly looked comfortable and I was quite disappointed in that unit last night. For the love of god start Helu!!! That kid has the want to and attitude to get it done and Lucky doesn't. You never know guys we may beat Missouri because they are off or we are really on our game. It could happen and we would definately forget this loss with a win like that.

Don't forget....4 Field Goals, while Va Tech did get down in the Red Zone a bit ( too much IMO ), The D did hold them to field goals quite a bit. Proud of em for that......

Game could have been a massacre if not for the D Steppin Up.

What those statistics show is 1) Virginia Tech has a good defense with big, fast, well-coached players and 2) our offensive line is built for the West Coast offense and not for any kind of multiple offense. Our offensive line just isn't very good, and all of the shaved heads and crap on Slauson's face don't scare anyone.

I agree, Helu hits the hole hard and decisively, whether there is actually a hole there or not, one cut and turn it up field. Marlon has alot of skills and can be productive, I just don't see him as an every down, get the tough yards I back we need right now.
