Last thing i'll say about the Blackshirts

I'm just getting tired about how everyone thinks they deserve it now. Why should we hand them out now and trivialize the whole tradition. And I know, i'm going to hear what about the seniors, but they should be the ones leading the way, and taking ownership of this defense.

I equate the handing out of the blackshirts, to a "moral victory"

We're not about moral victories, Nebraska never will be as long as I'm head coach. If we start being about moral victories, you need to get a new coach."
It seems no one remembers the 80s when our defense was why we never won national titles. They gave them out back then, right?
Exactly, I love how everyone is trying to equate this to game performance as the "tradition." As Huskerswrkhavok said above, the 2-deep got them at the end of fall ball just prior to the first game week. It symbolized the work it took to become a starter. Back then the work was tough, the walk on team was large and fought the scholarship players tooth and nail. Still the overall performance of the starting D in the 80's was good, but not the model of perfection everyone seems to make a Blackshirt D to be. The tradition wasn't created or changed by the dominance of the teams in the 90's but that seems to be all that anyone remembers. How is this for a comparison, no one in the Big XII is higher than 34 in total D (Oklahoma). In fact only 3 teams are in the top 50 in total D, OU, UT, and OSU. Nebraska sits 5th in the Big XII at 64 in total D. From being very near the bottom last year to upper half of the Big XII I would say is a signal that this year's team understands what level of effort and dedication it takes to play at this level. They have earned the Blackshirts.

I would like to see them handed out, but not just to keep with the tradition, of past teams. If we end up 6-6, no way, 7-5 naa, 8-4 with a win over CU and headed to a bowl game, Yes. IMHO

GBR!!!

So you want to hand them out, but not based on the tradition? That doesn't make sense, these jerseys wouldn't exist if it weren't for the tradition they sprang from. Is the intent to make a whole new tradition. I have an idea, let's have the fans vote on what the "tradition" should be going forward. Let's check the definition of tradition:

tra·di·tion /trəˈdɪʃən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[truh-dish-uhn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun 1. the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition.

2. something that is handed down: the traditions of the Eskimos.

3. a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting: The rebellious students wanted to break with tradition.

4. a continuing pattern of culture beliefs or practices.

5. a customary or characteristic method or manner: The winner took a victory lap in the usual track tradition.

It seems clear to me that you just can't make up what you want a tradition to be as you go. The tradition is that the 2-Deep earned the shirts.

And Bowman is doing well in the NFL :)

The bottom line is that BO wants some consistency. And so far we really haven't gotten that from the defense. TT was not exactly a dominant defensive performance. ISU was, but it was ISU.. and the breakdown early in the 3rd was not so great.

Honestly I don't see them being handed out this season, at least not during the regular season. Maybe if we just obliterate Baylor. And if we shut down OU you better believe they'll get them. But I don't see either of those happening, but if the consistency gets better maybe before the CU game? Possibly after the CU game as a reward for the season, if they're on the right track on defense that is.

Bo is using the blackshirts as a motivational tool at this point. You give them back after they've made some big strides or before a "statement" game to pump them up.

Maybe not...but we held them to their lowest point total and total offensive yards of the season, and held harrell under 300 passing yards. I would say that is a pretty impressive defensive performance.
It was an impressive offensive performance in controlling the clock, but I don't think it was anything more than an average defensive performance. Also need to take into account who else TT had played.

I still think Bo should wait to hand them out before we go to a Bowl Game hand them out at home before they head to the bowl game. Its a good way to say way to go defense, and a good way to let the Seniors practice for there last game knowing they finished the year good enough to be considered a Blackshirt. Just my opinion.
I'm beginning to think this is the best scenario too, unless something unexpected happens, such as a win against OU.

Nope - which is why this is a unique year and situation for the 'blackshirt' tradition at Nebraska.

But I think it's equally silly for people to clamor for blackshirts on the basis of how they do in games. You're going to be waiting around forever for perfection. At some point, Bo is going to decide that the defense has 'restored the order' - so to speak - and is worthy of being called the Blackshirt defense again.

A good game doesn't mean they deserve blackshirts, and poor play on the field doesn't mean they don't. C'mon, blackshirts transcend such cut-and-dry judgment.
I'm not all into the whole Blackshirt discussions, but I do like what you said here. Good stuff

I think you may have struck on the answer to the question. I think that Bo is looking for a level of effort and a degree of assignment-correct play that is consistent - every week. When he sees that, he awards them.

Indeed.
