Some Good Economic News for Nebraska

Despite slump, Yahoo plans new operations in Neb. (AP)

The announcement Friday from the Internet company and Nebraska officials comes just days after Yahoo said it would cut at least 1,500 workers as it deals with the economic downturn.

Earlier this year, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo applied for the biggest slate of state tax breaks available in Nebraska to help set up some operations in La Vista. Its plans include a customer service center in Omaha.

If the company goes ahead with the project, within four years it would have to invest at least $100 million and create at least 100 jobs with a minimum average salary of $68,700.

Yahoo shares were down nearly 5.5 percent in morning trading.

Well, Google is definitely the "gold standard" right now, but Yahoo! used to be pretty good. The trouble with it is that it can't seem to stop its stock slide, and can't really seem to find a "niche" any longer. Microsoft would still like its talent in the search arena, and probably its ad appeal - but both of those are declining quickly to Google.

Google announced a year (or three?) ago moving a large chunk of their operations out here to Tempe? or somewhere in the Valley area.

I still make a sucky salary :angry:

Yeah, sounds like the good folks of NE will really be getting their fair share from this deal! And half of the employees will be out of state transfers.

But if the past is any indication of the future, then the dot com economy is a guaranteed win!........Oh wait <_<

Yeah, I thought it was Google and I've heard they allow you to workout there at work, you have free daycare for your children, etc. The competition to get a job there is brutal though!
