I don't see Bodtmann ever amounting to much, so there is absolutely no reason to RS him since that will keep him on a year longer than need be.

There is one kid I would compare him to on our roster, but I won't since he has a cult following around here. :)

Plus, I doubt he even makes it through 4 years to begin with. Kid will likely never see the field (unless on ST) and is already having numerous shoulder problems with the same shoulder. If home sickness doesn't get him, PT will. If PT doesn't get him, then his injuries likely will.

Not sure what BW had in mind, but this might reflect on his position, LB, more than his being the 2nd best freshman or anything. He appears to be slightly underrated by some. I think he needs some more time to add a little weight, but he might be pretty good at coverage which some of the other prospects at LB struggle with. He may be able to immediately contribute on special teams as he is very athletic.

No, I just happened to list Bodtmann second because he was the first guy that popped in my hand.

And no, Bodtmann is definitely not under-rated.

I mean, Sean Callahan, the king of sunshine pumping is on a recruiting special for us and the best he could say is Bodtmann will be a backup and every team needs a guy like Bodtmann who knows his role. :lol:

And if you weren't around, HI was the same site who made guys like Jordan Adams, Brock Pasteur, Will Henry, Steve Allen, Robert Rands, Craig Roark, etc., made out to be the guys who would return us to glory. If they cannot even pull the wool over for Bodtmann that alone should tell you alot.

I know some people want him on the field because they see him hitting people, but anyone can lay a hard hit on someone if you allow yourself to play with reckless abandon. Unfortunately, a lot more goes into a football player than that. From everything I have heard the kid is a freak in the weight room. But on the field he has heart and little else. Sounds like the Rigoni comparisons were not far off.

Culbert, Thenarse, Asante, Smith, Osborne, O'Hanlon are all ahead of him right now. Bringing in Martinez and Washington. Alot of rumblings that a CB or two may make the move to safety as well.

Basically, the future is not bright for Wald as anything but a ST guy.

I went back and checked his "thread" and it seemed like everyone was excited to get him. Was it because he was an early "get" and people were just excited that recruiting had started? What has changed since then that has you "down" on this kid? I am not "attacking" your point of view, I am just looking for some more info on the kid. Thanks

That and people buy into the sunshine a little too much that is fed by the recruiting websites.

Lets be real for a second, how many times have you seen a recruiting website tell it like it is with a kid? If he isn't that good they will use the term 'sleeper', 'diamond in the rough' or some other term that keeps you believing all is well and we are getting quality kids. Are we getting quality kids? For the most part I believe we are. However, there are a couple I wish we could take a mulligan on. As much as we would like to believe, every kid in this class is not going to be as good as we are told.

A better question would be, what do people see in Bodtmann's film that leads them to believe he will be a viable option in the future?

This is what I see ..

Unimpressive film in the limited amount he has.

Numerous shoulder injuries in HS.

Will be playing LB/S in college with those numerous shoulder injuries.

And limited senior film (due to shoulder injuries) to see how far he actually has improved.

Bodtmann is honestly the type of guy you take a chance on if you strike out with a ton of other players. In no way is he the type of standout player that you offer early, court hard and hope to close. You save that for guys like Green, Williams, Burkhead, Young, etc.,

Think of it like this -- we get down closer to signing day and guys like Byrd, Norman and Robinson keep their grades in order. We get a call from Eric Martin wanting to be in this class, but we have to turn him away. How much are we cheating ourselves to take an injured project player like Bodtmann back in April, but turning away a great prospect like Martin because we don't have the room now? You can count me in the I will be beyond PO'd department.

It's all about timing in the recruiting world. Early in the process, you do not take kids unless they are super stud prospects that are almost cannot miss. That way you do not get yourself into a situation later where you have to turn away a better prospect later.

And before anyone jumps my rear saying I am going after a kid, I am not. I am judging the kid as a player, not personally. It is no different than if I judged Roy Helu or even Jase Dean as a player. If I'm not allowed to judge a football player as a player, then what is the intent of this board?

Back to an earlier post, when you hinted that maybe you thought Mason Wald was going to be a "bust". I wouldn't give up on him yet. He was a "late" pick up at the end of the process, helping fill or round out a class. (not one of those "early" signees, taking up room for a 5*)

Remember, he is only 1 of a couple of guys who didn't red-shirt, so he is making the dramatic jump from HS to Big 12 without the luxury of the developmet process. We all know how important special teams are, and if he does develop into a "Rigoni" and that is his limit, no problem. Not bad to have a guy on the team who can be a spark plug through special teams by delivering massive hits on kickoffs. Furthermore, the more "special team" specialists you have, the less you have to rely of putting full-time players out there, risking injury on every kickoff. I have heard a few interviews with players saying that the "hardest" hit they have taken in college football has been from "freshman Mason Wald". Not a guy from OU-MU-VT-etc.......but from Mason Wald. You may be right, but I am not ready to rule out that this kid will be valuable to us in the future.

The reason Wald did not redshirt is because of his limited ability on the field. As you can see, Bo is not about wasting a RS just to waste a RS. This isn't Callahan we are dealing with.

Like I said, I probably should not have said it because some are gonna stick up for the guy regardless just because he put some people on their rears in HS. But as I said then, it was really strange they never showed his coverage abilities. From everything I have heard he showed us why when he got here.

Nothing wrong with Wald's role as he will be valuable. But he isn't going to be a starter or star player. Damm sure will be a fan favorite though. :)

 
I know a lot people do this and to me it is a little annoying (no offense to anyone) but we are getting some really talented young safeties as of late. From what I hear Smith and Osborne are going to be really good and hopefully Washington will make it to campus on time. Since he is such a good hitter and seems to have decent speed wouldn't he be worth a project at linebacker? I know he is a bit short but no shorter than Norman. It just seems like a waste to have him at safety.

What have you seen or heard about Leverson? Is this a kid that will eventually develop into a player or not. He is tremendously gifted athletically, but will it translate into Big 12 football.

Big time talent, little time brain.

I know he impressed the heck out of the coaches in camp, but he has some dedication issues.

If he worked to go with his talent he likely cracks the rotation pretty easily next year.

BigWillie, I was enjoying your insight in this thread until this last quote concerning John Leverson. I know this kid personally and you cannot question his brain. He's a tremendously smart kid, both in the classroom and on the field.

 
not trying to "assume" anything or "stick up for anyone", but possibly, BW meant that Leverson's "brain" comment was related to decision making on comittment/dedication issues rather than knowledge or overall intelligence.

that's just how I took it. Base on the fact that BW said that if his dedication would match his athletic ability, he would be a player. Maybe he just hasn't made the best decision YET.... tough jump, and he will come around. Remember, many of us thought the same about Potter and his dedication, and it took a few years, but look at the results.
