Players visit to hospital

Pedro Guerrero

Team HuskerBoard
I don’t think this has been brought up but I found it interesting.

Yesterday on the “Big Show” with Matt and Fat Trav, Travis said that he and his crew went to the Children’s Hospita where the teams we visiting patients which is typical bowl game stuff. That being said Clemson brought Swinney and the whole starting line-up while NU brought a GA, Wesch, Adi, Henery and 3 guys Trav and his producer had never heard of. They brought up the point that the Pelini’s get a pass because of what has been going on in their lives as of late, but they thought at the least Watson or Sanders could have gone as well as some of the higher profile players. While I agree with what Travis is saying I’m kind of torn on the situation. I know the players do plenty of work in Lincoln as far as the community is concerned however these trips are part of the whole Bowl thing so they could have done a little better then they did. These may be a non-issue to some and would have been to the “Big Show” as well if Clemson hadn’t brought who they did

Would not read too much into it either way. One thing that Osborne always instilled into his players was the "community first" kind of theme. I think that Bo will do this also, but I figure that Bo is still getting his feet wet. This was a fast year for Bo, then with the death of his father just before the bowl game...you know what I am talking about. I think things will slow down a little bit for this team, since we will have some kind of idea what to expect from Bo and the rest of the coaches on the field.

It is up to the players also to make the decision to do things in the community, you can't put a gun to their heads. Same with the other coaches. They did probably miss the boat on this one when it comes to publicity...and we all know publicity = recruiting.

Well I admit probably a non-issue, but since I have nothing new to think about today I will contribute. I think alot is going on, but it looks like maybe Tom would have stepped in and sent some bigger names. Or maybe he did and got those that did go, there. One could also argue that Henery is a big name, but probably not to the kids in the Jacksonville area.

Matt and Trav tend to go a tad overboard sometimes, but i do like to listen to them on my drive home, it is hard to say why more people were not there, and i am sure there is a reason for everything, i can't imagine how hectic it is for the team when they arrive for bowls, they probably have things going on here and there and doing this and that, I am sure it was in no way intentional that more were at the hospital.

Are these players high enough profile for you?

Like I said I know they do that stuff around Lincoln just thought it was odd they didn’t do it at the bowl game as well.

FYI – 1620 was playing the stupid Rutgers/NC State when I was driving home yesterday. I wouldn’t watch that game on TV let alone listen to it on the radio. I listen to 590 for about 5 minute while USC goes to commercial at the top of the hour.

Beau Davis (4th string QB) and Justin Baumgartner (Long Snapper - and I admit, I had to look on the roster to even figure out who he was) are 'high profile'???

Would be to me if I were in the hospital. God Bless all the unpaid student athlete kiddies trying to get a degree who find time to do so. Beau Davis should be an inspiration to all. He's toiled away in the program, never once receiving big accolades, and playing in only two games in his career. Did Beau skip out on the Huskers like several other QBs? No. Gotta respect a kid like that. I'd love to meet Beau. And, um, the long snapper kid, too.......

Here is a good one from last month. I believe I saw Pillen08 in there.

Also,

I remember earlier this year a video of Pelini and a number of players visiting St. Elizabeth in Lincoln. I thought it was from the Journal Star. I remember Helu being a bit of a clown, it was quite entertaining. I can't find it though.

I think there is a fine line here. These kids have got a lot of things going on their lives right now.....school and other things. Now with the bowl situation, it might be easier to get in on these things. Also, as it has already been stated, you cannot force these kids to go. I am sure there are some that go just about every time. Maybe some of the others have family with them.

Last, kids are going to be excited to see the college football player no matter who they are. I am sure if it was the Heisman winner, they would get a little more excited, but these kids get excited about any of these guys coming in to visit with them.

I think it cool when the players visit the kids/ fans in hospital. Anything to brighten up their day I say.

I can still remember the looks on the faces of the kids we visited in the Shriners Hospital when I played in the Shrine Bowl oh so many years ago.

When Dabo took over at Clemson, one of the first things he did was take the entire team to the children's hospital in nearby Greenville. There was a huge reaction from the players due to this, who made it well known how much they drew from the experience. With another such opportunity being presented to them, I'm sure they jumped at the chance for a repeat of what they got to do earlier in the year. I'm not knocking Nebraska at all for a less-than-awesome turnout at the hospital, just trying to add a little background info to clarify

Stupid article. Who cares if the starting lineup showed, I guarantee those kids loved every second of it. When I was very young, I spent a Christmas in the hospital. I had a firefighter show up and gave me a couple Transformers...it was the best ever. Way for the writer to piss on players period who go or "don't go" to a hospital to do something like that...
