Fehoko plays the game fast, physical and with a relentless motor. While he may not project particularly high as a positional prospect it's hard not to like this guy a lot as a total football player. Lacks ideal height as 'tweener outside linebacker / defensive end prospect but is thick, well-built and plays bigger. Has been a disruptive perimeter player throughout high school but actually may project better as an inside linebacker and a pass-rush specialist on passing downs. Has a quick first step off the ball and generates good short-area power. Jolts blockers back at the point of attack and display very strong hands and upper-body strength. Plays with good leverage and a strong, wide base. Lacks great fluid through his hips but can bend and get down the line of scrimmage. Not overly fast but has good chase and football speed. Not a sideline-to-sideline guy but shows good short-area speed and quickness. Shows good closing burst and runs through ball carriers on contact. While he makes a lot of plays near the line of scrimmage, he can struggle changing direction sharply and has a tendency to overrun the play. His stiffness could be masked if employed in the middle or strong side and asked to fill more downhill. We feel he may struggle breaking down and matching up on the perimeter versus quicker D-I skill players as a perimeter 'backer. A better vertical attacker than a lateral pursuer. That said, defensive end is still not out of the question despite his lack of height. He displays good get-off and an initial push upfield as a run defender and can beat blockers to the corner as a pass rusher with his combination of speed and strong hand technique. Overall, Fehoko lacks ideal measurables but brings a lot to the table as a total football player. Could make an impact if used creatively, we like his potential as a 3rd down edge rusher/blitzer and linebacker on run downs. Good prospect and a heck of a football player.

Fehoko could be top player on the Islands
It was a very strong year for talent in Hawaii last year in both depth and blue chip talent at the top of the board. The class of 2010 doesn't look quite as strong but one player that is making a ton of national noise is Farrington (Honolulu, Hawaii) athlete V.J Fehoko.

Fehoko is the third Div I recruit in the family as his older brother Whitley signed with San Diego State three years ago and Sam was a red-shirt freshman at Texas Tech this past season. Neither player received anywhere near the attention that V.J is receiving right now.

"It's really incredible what's happening for him," Fehoko's mother Linda said. "He's up to 16 or 17 offers right now with Wyoming being the most recent school. It has been so exciting to watch and we're excited to see how everything works out for him."

As a junior, Fehoko racked up 86 tackles, 18 for loss, 19 sacks and forced five fumbles. The athlete lines up at both defensive end and outside linebacker and is moved all over the field. He's a talented pass rusher with a nice burst, is very strong and knows how to get up the field.

"Right now, some of the schools that have offered me are Texas Tech, Nebraska, UCLA, Cal, Notre Dame, Washington, Colorado, BYU, Utah and several others. I'm also hearing from Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn and a few others.

"My top five would be Texas Tech, UCLA, Washington, Cal and Hawaii. I plan to take my visits though and I'm not going to make an early commitment anywhere."

According to Linda Fehoko, there are several factors pulling her son in different directions.

"With Texas Tech, V.J is very close with Sam," Linda said. "The only concern is we have no idea what is going to happen with the coaching staff because of the contract dispute going on. Sam likes it there a lot but I think ultimately, V.J knows he has to do what is best for him.

"At UCLA, we love Norm Chow and he's a legend here. He has been recruiting VJ for awhile now and we think he's just a great man. Another school that is up there is Notre Dame because V.J and Manti Te'o are very close and Manti is already telling VJ he needs to come and play with him there.

"I know that surprised a lot of people when Manti chose Notre Dame but we all thought he was going to pick them just by how much he talked about them. VJ, Manti and Robby Toma have been close since childhood but like I said, V.J will make the best decision for him and won't let what others want him to do influence his decision."

Fehoko is carrying a 3.4 GPA and scored an 1160 on the SAT. He'll attend the all-Poly camp in Hawaii as well as the NIKE Camp at Stanford. He may take an unofficial visit to Cal while he's down for the NIKE Camp as well.

Still plenty of time though. And some of the comments note that he is pretty open. Getting him for a visit will be key.

BOUNTIFUL, Utah -- Under Armour All-American linebacker V.J. Fehoko (Kahuku, Hawaii/Kahuku) was already familiar with the recruiting process before it even began for him.

Fehoko's older brother, Sam, signed with Texas Tech in the Class of 2007. Another brother, Whitley, signed with San Diego State in the Class of 2006.

"When you see the process unfold as a spectator, it's exciting," V.J. Fehoko said. "But when it happens to you, it's sort of a reality check."

Hawaii, Nebraska, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Utah, Texas Tech, Washington, California, UCLA, Colorado and other schools in the Mountain West and WAC have offered Fehoko a scholarship. Southern California is seriously evaluating the hard-hitting linebacker, as well.

"I have no favorites," he said. "I am giving every school a chance to recruit me."

Fehoko was in Lubbock, Texas, during the spring to watch his brother's spring game and he got an up-close look at the Red Raiders. This caused some speculation that he too would be casting his lot with Mike Leach's program.

"The only reason I was there was to see my brother's spring game," he said. "If he had not been playing for Texas Tech, chances are I would not have been at Texas Tech visiting for that long."

Still, that certainly doesn't mean the Red Raiders aren't under heavy consideration. One of the things that Fehoko is looking at is atmosphere. He says he wants to go to a place where on gameday, the "town stands still" and says that the atmosphere in Lubbock is like that.

"When they beat Texas this past year, they rushed the field like three times," he said.

Most of the Hawaiian prospects that talked recruiting at All-Poly expressed a strong desire to head to the mainland to play college football. V.J. has a lot of teams from the mainland in the mix for his services, but has not ruled out the University of Hawaii, where his father Vili is the unofficial mascot for Warriors football games.

"I am going to give Hawaii a chance," V.J. Fehoko said. "I like Hawaii. Growing up with my dad there, I was always watching the games from the sidelines and I still feel that is home to me when I watch."

Fehoko talked about the things he would be looking for in a program.

 

"The crucial factor for me is my position coach," he said. "That's key because I will be building a relationship with him and he will be the one developing me for the next 4-5 years. I also would like to have a good relationship with the head coach for that same reason. I want to be in a good environment, too. Not some place where I can get in trouble and I can just focus on football and academics."

Jeez, those bold parts really, really seem to describe our team to a tee. Imagine if he hit it off with Bo and Ek... he'd be ours to lose...

 
idk, if you party in lincoln(like most college kids do), its hard not to run into johnny law sooner or later... the fact that Bo & co. have a strong stance on the issue helps, but that can't always stop a kid from going out on saturday nights

True. But I think Manhattan is more of a party town, but wherever you go you know that there will be a party somewhere. I think Bo is doing an excellent job teaching the players to keep their head on straight.

I live in Manhattan now and lived in Lincoln in the 80's. Mancrappin is no where the party town that Lincoln is. Granted, I'm a little older now and don't party much, but I worked at K-State and can tell you that they have nothing on Lincoln here. One of my employees ( KSU student) went to NU's spring game this year and Loved Lincoln because " Lincoln knows how to party!!" :clap
