true freshman likely to play

Playing true freshmen

LJS Blog

Well, we're approaching the first game, and as is the case before each season opener, we're all curious about how many true freshmen will play, who will play, how much, where, etc. I think there are seven true freshmen who stand a reasonable (and in some cases certain) chance of playing this season. I'll put them in order of likelihood:

1. Rex Burkhead, RB

2. Eric Martin, LB who will play special teams

3. Andrew Green, CB

4. Antonio Bell, WR and PR/KR

5. Cody Green, QB

6. Jeremiah Sirles, OT

7. Jason Ankrah, DE

The remaining freshmen I'd bet, at this point, will redshirt. Brent Qvale would've been on the above list had he not had suffered a shoulder injury.

a nice article on Cody Green's progress.

NOT SO GREEN ANYMOREOWH

True freshman quarterback Cody Green got his coaches' attention Monday by making the kind of pre-snap decision in practice they'd expect to see from a veteran.

Coach Bo Pelini mentioned the play at his press conference today. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson elaborated on it later.

Green was apparently able to recognize a blitzing defense, make adjustments and take advantage. It was impressive for a first-year guy, according to both Watson and Pelini.

"(It was) really brilliant on his part," Watson said. "A really poised guy did that."

Here's Pelini's take on Green earlier today: "I'm seeing the things that are being taught to him applied. And it's fun to watch because I'm seeing a lot of development."

Watson said today that Green has accomplished more than any freshman quarterback he's ever coached. But both Watson and Pelini refused to discuss their plans for playing Green during Saturday's season opener.

Other freshman could play, though, according to Watson. When asked, he mentioned true freshman Antonio Bell and redshirt freshmen Khiry Cooper, Kyler Reed and Ben Cotton as likely contributors Saturday.

On the injury front, junior left guard Keith Williams returned to practice today. Watson expects Williams to play Saturday.

Every day more and more info confirms that Cody might indeed be the real deal. That could be very good and in an immediate way.

It will be interesting to see how Green will be played on Saturday, that is if he plays at all.

Kinda makes me want to take back all those comments I made this summer about him being a guaranteed redshirt.

The more I hear, it seems it'll be harder for the coaches to keep him off the field.

I would imagine that we're well past discussing if he'll play. I'm probably one of the staunchest "redshirt him" guys out there and I'd be stunned at this point if he doesn't play. They're talking up a storm about him, and I doubt seriously if they'd do that if he wasn't going to play.

Further, when's the last time we heard ANYTHING about LaTravis Washington? The last I remember hearing of him, he was sad that Green had passed him on the depth chart, and nothing since that I can recall. If Green were going to 'shirt, we'd be hearing something about Washington at this point. That silence speaks volumes about what they're going to do with Green.

I don't care about who redshirts and who doesn't, but, at the same time, I would contend that most HS grads don't come in ready to play from a physical standpoint. A year of training and adjustment to football can work wonders for a lot of guys. For a very select few guys, taking a year off makes no sense.

I'm with you on this one. I was all about Green getting a RS. But if he is really that good, i would more than love to see him contribute now, just not at the detriment of the team.
