Positive win for Husker nation last night. I saw quite a few things I liked, and a few didn't. I narrowed it down to three (from each category) I felt was most important.
Things I liked
1) Zac Lee can play, and Helu can shine. For putting up 152 yards on 16 carries, one has to be impressed. Now, if they can both just stay healthy, then this season can be something to brag about.
2) The secondary. With the exception of that blown coverage assignment of FAU's fullback leading to a 38 yard pass, the secondary looked very impressive. They were flying to the ball, creating multiple turnovers, and really playing great coverage for most of the game. They bent, but never broke, and that was something reassuring to see for Husker faithful.
3) Turnovers. We got 3 of them, and could have had 5. If Matt O'Hanlon's first interception wasn't negated by a Jared Crick penalty and if Larry Asante had held onto the ball he caught, we could have had one of the most impressive Husker turnover performances in a long time. But, those 3 turnovers were still very helpful, and 2 of 3 led to touchdowns.
Things I didn't like
1) Dropped passes. I counted four in the first half alone, which really showcased the knock we took once Swift and Pederson left. It was only the first game, and Zac Lee did have a couple of wayward throws on some of those dropped passes, but if you get your hands on it that's all on you. 2 of the 4 dropped passes I counted were great throws that were just dropped.
2) D-Line pass rush. Thought to be a strength, they really didn't perform as I think many of us expected them too. Some of that was due to Rusty Smith, of course. Even if he didn't have a great game statistically, he still knows how to run the offense in a productive way allowing him to get off clean throws like it is second nature to him. But, I really thought I would see more pressure from the front four defensively on passing plays. Bo did admit his game plan didn't call for a lot of blitzing, so it is possible a lot of favorable matchups just didn't happen because of that.
3) The "pipeline" had some difficulties. In the first quarter alone, it seemed like every pass play that didn't intend for Zac Lee to roll out, ended up making him roll out. It appeared that he was running for his life on quite a few throws during the game. The protection is going to need to get better if they want to be successful in running the ball and protecting Zac Lee this year.
So that is that. Hopefully we can expand on the good things we did for next week's game and fix the problems that were most noticeable.
