Mizzou Not Getting Any Love From Bowl Committees

All-Conference
Big 12 commissioner worried that Insight Bowl might pass on Missouri By MIKE DeARMOND

The Kansas City Star

Missouri, whose athletic department officials as late as Tuesday thought the Tigers would be invited to play in the Insight Bowl, is preparing for the worst: Selection to play in the Dec. 31 Texas Bowl in Houston.

The Texas Bowl has the final spot in the pecking order of eight bowl games contracted by the Big 12 Conference.

“This isn’t over,” Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe said Wednesday afternoon in a telephone interview with The Kansas City Star.

“I know (Missouri athletic director) Mike Alden and the Missouri folks have made a tremendous case to all the bowls they might be selected to," Beebe said. "I don’t know that Missouri could do a better job than they are doing.”

And, Beebe added, he shares the concern of MU officials that the Tigers might be passed over for the Insight Bowl bid by a 6-6 Iowa State team.

“I am concerned about a bowl that would select a team that has two less wins and was beaten by that team head to head.”

Unfortunately, that is just the scenario Missouri officials have come to fear.

“We’re hearing that the Insight Bowl may prefer to invite Iowa State than us,” said Chad Moller, the director of media relations for MU athletics. “The last time they played there they brought 20,000 fans.”

So, 6-6 Iowa State in the Insight Bowl, and 6-6 Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl, and 8-4 Missouri in Texas bowl?

“That’s what we’re hearing, too,” Zac Emmons, a spokesman for the Houston-based Texas Bowl, told The Star on Wednesday afternoon.

Alden was obviously not happy about the situation. However, for public consumption at least, Alden repeated the Big 12 Conference party line.

“The bowls can invite any team they choose,” Alden said. “We’ll be excited to play in any bowl we are invited to.”

However, Alden said he had spoken several times with Beebe on the matter and that Missouri would continue to do everything within the rules of the Big 12 Conference to inform bowl officials of the pluses of inviting Missouri.
OUCH!

Maybe when Mizzou travels better than this...

Iowa State wouldn't look like a huge get.

Personally, I'd rather Mizzou went to the Texas Bowl (at least over the Insight Bowl).

First, Texas Bowl will be on ESPN on New Years Eve afternoon. It would be against Navy - more interesting opponent than Mich. St or Minn.

Second, it's in Texas. About half the Mizzou players are from Texas and it would be good for recruiting.

Third, Insight Bowl is on the NFL Network - a network that millions don't get on cable - including all of Time Warner. So I wouldn't be able to see the game.

It's not like some recruit is going to say "Wow! I'd commit to Mizzou except they didn't go to the Insight Bowl."

Are there any? If so, I'd like to know what they are.

What?

Yeah, play in the Texas bowl if you want to cut the income your school gets IN HALF.

The Insight Bowl most recently payed out $1,200,000. The most recent Texas Bowl paid out somewhere between $500,000 to $700,000.

I don't have the time to research your point about the networks, but for now I'll take your word for it. Regardless, the Insight Bowl is still more respectable than going to the Texas Bowl. Maybe not to you or other football fans out there, but I know plenty of people who don't even know that the Texas Bowl exists. On the other hand, the Insight Bowl is something quite a few good teams have played in.

Obviously, your Athletic Department is focusing on the monetary aspects of the Bowls rather than the publicity aspect. If they shared your opinion, you guys wouldn't care.

actually the big 12 spits all bowl money evenly, so MU doesnt lose money on the bowl.

However they will not get reimbursed as much for travel. That difference is about 400K which is a pretty good amount.

Mu's home attendence, Neutral site attendence and last 5 bowl attendence averages all kick ISU's butt. I have no clue why we (MU) is dealing with this crap for the 3rd straight year. It is really getting old, and they whole idea that MU doesnt travel is bunk. Yeah we dont travel like Alabama or Nebrasaka. But guess what, NOBODY does. Missouri has a pretty darn respectable attentance to their last 5 bowl games.

Supposedly the Bowl remembers the last time ISU came to their event like 5 or so years ago. 20,000+ ISU fans showed up so that really good turn out is deep in the Insight Committee's thought process. Not sure how they are evaluating what MU would bring in a following.

if they are truely baseing this off of what fans did 10 years ago after a 25 year bowl drought then they will be disapointed when ISU shows up this year. They had 45K a game in Ames. Think about how you guys knock on MU's attendance, which at 65K is 20K less than Nebraska. Well ISU is 20K less than MU. MU posted attendance at two neutral site games of 142,000. ISU had 40K in arrowhead in their neutral site game this year.

Its just stupid really. If you are looking at the past then look at the last 5 bowls that MU has been in when they have sold more than their ticket allotment and sold out the cotton bowl in record time.

It erks me a little just because it keeps happening. 07 we got jumped by a team we beat head to head, that finished behind us in conference and in record and was ranked below us. 08 we got jumped by a team we beat head to head, that finished behind us in conference and in record and was ranked below us. And now not only are we going to get jumped by OU who is 7-5 (understandable, how many chances does a mid level bowl get a picking OU) but could also be jumped by TWO 6-6 teams, ISU and ATM.

people assume MU doesnt get fans to games or doesnt travel to games. But most would not be able to guess where MU is in the big attendance. MU finished 5th again this season behind Texas, Nebraska, OU and ATM. The next closest school to MU is OSU and they average more than 10,000 less fans per home game.

Point blank, its a bunch of bulls**t and it gets a little old. And you guys wonder why MU fans can be so pissy some times ;)
