Texas Tech's quarterback battle will have to wait.

Red Raiders senior Taylor Potts is expected to miss the remaining eight spring practices after suffering a cut on the webbing between the index and middle finger on his right hand.

"He got six deep stitches,'' coach Tommy Tuberville said after Friday's practice, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "We're not going to take any chances with it. After about seven, eight, nine days we'll look at it and see if he can throw a little bit.''

His injury came near the end of Wednesday's practice, two days after fellow quarterback Steven Sheffield underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot. Sheffield won't be able to return to the field for eight to 10 weeks.

Potts injured his throwing hand after hitting a teammate's helmet while following through on a pass.

The injury was originally expected to only hold Potts out until the end of this week.

The two are the frontrunners for the starting quarterback job throughout the spring until next season.

Now, sophomore Seth Doege and redshirt freshman Jacob Karam will take the snaps at quarterback in coach Tommy Tuberville's first spring in Lubbock.

When the injury bug strikes, it turns into an epidemic. The second QB to go down with injuries in just as many days.

Granted, this isn't as serious as Sheffield's injury, but it's looking to be a tough row to hoe for new coach Tubberville at TT.

Texas Tech senior quarterback Taylor Potts will have surgery on his throwing hand and miss eight weeks, a school official told ESPN.com on Monday.
Potts suffered a deep laceration to the webbing between his right index and middle finger when he hit a teammate's helmet on the followthrough of a pass late in practice on Wednesday. He received six stitches, but the damage was worse than originally believed, and the surgery will fix ligament damage to his hand, keeping him out for the remainder of the spring.

Tuberville previously said he hoped to have Potts throw next week, presumably when the stitches were removed. Surgery now removes that option.
