Busy Husker practice Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Stadium. Nebraska scrimmaged for most of it, conducting 150 plays. "It was good. It was real base. All we wanted to do was block, run, throw and catch, all those things, all those things that you want to see in your first scrimmage," Husker offensive coordinator
Shawn Watson said. "So it was a good go, a real good go."
Tight ends
Dreu Young (hamstring) and
Ben Cotton both sat the practice out with injuries. "We got some guys nicked up but it hasn't hurt us because of all the multiple personnel groups," Watson said. "We just spin a different group in there. We haven't really stopped any of our progress because of it."
With the injuries, Watson cited sophomore
Kyler Reed as a player who has seen a lot of action. "So it's been a blessing for him. Sometimes hardships bring a blessing to somebody else and that's what it has been for him. He's getting better because of the reps." Watson said the offense is right where they want to be in terms of installation of scheme. "What a week ago was new has become familiar."
The coach didn't wish to single out any one quarterback's play from the scrimmage. "I hate to single one out because they're all at the same spot, they're all developing. You see them growing. You see them doing the things I want to see them do in terms of managing us."
This likely won't be the last big scrimmage for the Huskers before the Red-White game.
"We're scrimmaging at least one period a day, and then we'll probably have another big one," Watson said. "We'll see where we're at health-wise, how we're developing and what we need to do."
