Insomnia cure?

GMoose

All-Conference
So here's the deal. I've always had sleeping problems. But it's gotten to the point where getting to sleep is at least a 4 hour commitment, and that's being shy. I've stopped taking melatonin because 5x the recommended dose doesn't even faze me anymore. I've taken ambiem a couple of times, and even that doesn't work for me.

Any suggestions?

I had some problems similiar to this awhile back, but I never came to a solution. Eventually I got through the phase and starting sleeping normal again, but I don't require alot of sleep anyways. I got nothing for you other than support buddy. :dunno

What's your diet and exercise like? Insomnia is caused by a lot of different things, stress being one of them. If you haven't tried it or aren't already living it, might be worth a shot to adopt a healthy lifestyle and take a relaxing run/hot shower before bed.

I hate ambien. Damn thing is a placebo. On a number of occasions with both myself and people I know it's actually worked more like a caffeine pill than a sleeping pill.

Have you tried 10 deep breaths really fast, then hold the last one until you pass out?

I've used ambien successfully for a while. I'm taking clonezepam right now and it works wonders, but it has side effects I'm not happy about.

Stress is a factor, as is caffeine. Stop all caffeine intake completely before trying anything else, and that means even a cup of coffee at 8am 15 hours before you try to sleep. Cut it out completely, as well as all energy drinks and sugary drinks like juice, etc. Definitely nothing like red bull or five hour energy, no matter what time of day you take it. Exercise, especially a mix of cardio and weight training, really helps.

Your best bet is to do something dietary or exercise-related. Resorting to drugs should be your last option.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'll elaborate a little.

-I'm 20 (no Mrs. right now  ), in college, on summer break, and currently not working. Stress is NOT the problem

-I've eliminated caffeine from my life. As a kid, I never had caffeinated pop, so I'm pretty sensitive to it. I might have 1/3 of a mug of coffee if I have to wake up super early. Maybe once a month.

-I work out 8 times a week. Part of those sessions include 45 minutes of cardio.

-My diet is immaculate. Equal servings of all food groups plus a little extra protein for muscle building. Nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't eaten junk food or fast food in over a month, my diet would bring a tear to the eye of a dietitian.

So after that, any other advice ? :hmmph

OTC Benadryl worked for me when I worked nights and had trouble sleeping during the day. One side effect is the hungover feeling that only some good 'ol strong coffee would help alleviate. Benzo's like clonazepam, xanax, valium, etc can have paradoxical effects as stated by other members like increased agitation and restlessness. My $.02

GBR

forgot: benzodiazapines are a controlled substance also and unless you have a valid prescription. BAM failed drug screening.
