According to Sipple...

Yep, fair enough, and I'm just more skeptical than most. I've been wrong before but I won't really get on board the T-Mart train unless/until it actually happens. Basically he sounds like this year's 'Cody Green' to fans. "So maybe his passing is a concern, but..." turned out to be a big 'but.'
I agree completely, however legit competition will only improve the team

I think Martinez might get some playing time but I see Lee as the starter. I think the most interesting competition will be between Burkhead and Martinez for playing time.

Basically he sounds like this year's 'Cody Green' to fans. Dual threat at QB. Green drew comparisons to Frazier when it looked like he could play as a true frosh. Taylor draws comparisons to Crouch. We love our potential option QBs, even though we don't run that O anymore - which I think contributes to a lot of this hype. "So maybe his passing is a concern, but..." turned out to be a big 'but.'

We shall see.
definitely agree with that for the most part. we shall see, competition brings out the best and thats all we can hope for!

Nebraska QB situation: T. Martinez, Green or Lee? I'm hearing Martinez is having an excellent summer. This race will be close.

And last year at this time Zac Lee was faster, smarter and had a stronger, more accurate arm than Joe Ganz. How'd that work out for us? I promise you the coaches leak half this stuff as a motivational ploy to the others.

and i would definitely say that Lee is both faster and stronger than was Ganz. as well as that was mostly fan evaluation of recruiting videos, not stuff that was "leaked"..

With respect to Sipp, he's always been a glass 90% full kinda guy. That doesn't necessarily really know what he's talking about. Well, it's not really a diss on Sipp's knowledge, which I'm sure is fine, but rather his insight. I always think that his articles and videos make very shallow (and unfailingly positive) statements.
This.

It's not wise to put much stock into any prediction Steve Sipple makes.

He's a writer, and he can either attract people by saying outlandish stuff, or he can play to what his audience wants to hear.

Either way, I usually like what Sip has to say. Even though he has been pretty optimistic in some situations, I've seen him be just as pessimistic in others.

Isn't Sipple saying what he's heard rather than giving an opinion?

"I'm hearing Martinez is having an excellent summer."

This does not suprise me. We've been hearing this about Martinez all along. He makes plays. I think his passing is still a question mark but one thing is for sure. Lee and Green didn't make many 'plays' last year or show the capability of being able to do so. Even though his only action has been the spring game T Mart still came in as a freshman and in his first drive showed flashes of what he's capable of.

I still can't wait to see Carnes though but if Martinez can show that he's a halfway decent passer I'm all for him seeing action. We can't have an anemic offense like last year and expect to win football games.

In fairness, Lee showcased the ability make plays a few times last year. I think confidence was his biggest issue, among confusion.

I agree. I think Lee did make some plays last season and he did play injured also. I'm really hoping Lee 'gets it' this year and really do hope Zac plays well enough that we can rely on just him as the starter this year. I still want to see T Mart in some situations too. Really excited at that possibility.

I look at it this way. Lee is more than likely the #1 due to experience. T-Mart can easily push for the #2. He is already the best runner of the 3 and if he can throw as good or better than Green (which cant be difficult) he probably has a lock on the #2 spot. Now if he developes into a good passer I dont see any reason he couldnt steal the #1.

One thing is for certain, competition is a good thing. If we have 3 guys battling for the starting spot, I am not going to think it is because we are terrible at that position. I think it is because we are deep at that position. :koolaid2:
T-Mart throw as good as Green??? Did you watch him throw at the spring game? I wasn't impressed at all...he has wheels but don't let that fact overplay you thought on his ability to throw...Green has his issues throwing but his pocket presences is good and he does have a cannon of an arm...

If Martinez is the best QB that scares me. Yes, he would be suited to run a run heavy option game, but plenty of us question Wats' play calling in the offense he's been running for years and years, I don't know how successful we'll be with him calling a new offense.
Good point.

If TO was running the offense that's not a problem at all. But SW running a power/option offense?? Well......

watson ran a power offense at CU and destroyed us in 01...

Having three names mentioned for our starting QB and some love for all of them is something only homers would believe will bode well. We are likely in SERIOUS trouble at the QB position for the second year in a row. Last year was likely the low point of Big Red football on the O and the high point in a long while on D. We have the same cast back on O and lost huge on D. In spite of the love some rags give us; the truth is there are big problems. Some claim that Martinez is the answer with his legs. Unlikely at best that we put in a successful whole new offense in fall practice. Likely a disaster if we try.

Others say that our RBs will take the pressure off of Lee and he'll only throw a few times a game and that will make him more effective? So we're saying we have the same QB that is subpar and the same RBs we had last year and that this year we'll be better. Talk about doing the same thing and hoping for a different result. Helu has not proved to be a durable RB. If he is hampered; you are right back to where you were last year.

We have a huge QB problem and to believe otherwise is simply drinking koolaid now. I think with any of the top 20 QBs in the country we could be great. Without one of them, I can see a lot of disappointment. I hope I am wrong but 100 yards against Tejas will not get it done.

Though there are problems at reciever; one decent QB is what I believe will be our achilles heel.

pocket presence and a "cannon" does not make a good passer and i would argue that his pocket presence is poor at best.

you can make excuses for the guy all day (freshman, 18 years old, difficult offense, etc.) but you can also point to the fact that he doesnt seem to be grasping things well and all of the rumors that he doesnt take the game seriously and is just interested in the ladies. this offense was more difficult to run when zac taylor came in and took over and he did just fine in his first year.

"but oh green looks the part!" so did josh freeman at kstate..
