Interesting comment from Coach Sanders tonight on Sports Nightly

I just caught Lane Grindle's excellent "Sports Nightly" interview with Nebraska defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders.
I was driving home as I listened, so I'll have to paraphrase. But it was very interesting to hear Sanders say that if he were starting a defense from scratch, and had his pick of players, he'd select Eric Hagg first.

Not Prince Amukamara. Not Jared Crick.

Sanders praised Hagg's athleticism and versatility, saying the 6-foot-2 , 210-pound senior can play cornerback, safety, nickel or linebacker. NU's "peso" defense will allow Hagg to remain on the field on every down.

Amukamara and Crick are receiving a lot of preseason hyperbole -- well-deserved, for sure. Meantime, Hagg seems to fly under the radar, though not in Sanders' eyes.

I would too. That guy is a freak. He can basically play 3 positions on the field. A guy with that much flexibility is a coaches dream.

Now if he doesnt bounce off quarterbacks when he hits'em then we should be fine.

If I were to dig back among my posts, I'd be able to find several where I sung Hagg's praises. I frequently called him "A good-looking ball player" as I recall. I'm not surprised in the least that Coach Sanders praises him. What I am surprised about is that Hagg hasn't had a bigger impact so far. Hopefully that changes this year.

Sanders has been saying that pretty much since he got here. Hagg is a freak athlete.

Wasn't this the same player that had two PI penalties called on him against Texass? I think the coverage was good but he never looked back for the ball on both plays and that was an automatic flag. One was pretty much uncatchable and they still flagged him for the second penalty. I hope that part of his game improves. I just re-watched most of the Big 12 CG and those two plays stood out.

Hagg is a freak of nature, guy has all the tools to be very successful in his career. Just has to learn to control that athleticism and anger at times on the field. Control is important too.

The bad thing is, his freakishness and his ability to play multiple positions probably has hurt his chances of finding one position, be it corner or safety, stick to it, improve every year, and have tremendous impact.

I wish he and West would play safety, and I wish they would leave Gomes as the nickle. Gomes at nickle seems to make a ton of plays.

But, I have to assume that the coaches know more than I.

That bolded part...are you Pelini? :laughpound

But, I agree. Hagg is arguably the most important part of our defense.

I'm pretty sure Pelini stole that line from me, but I'm not going to call him on it. He can use it, free of charge.

One of these days the announcers and fans will get this right. There is no penalty for face guarding in College Football. <_<
