Indianapolis Selected to Host First Big Ten Championship Game

International Man of Mystery
The Big Ten has selected Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium as the proposed site to host the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game in 2011.
The league announced Thursday afternoon that it will begin a 30-day period to negotiate a one-year agreement with Indiana Sports Corp and Lucas Oil Stadium. After that agreement is in place, the league will conduct a thorough process to find a home for the game in 2012 and beyond.

"We felt at this time it was important to identify a site for the first championship game and then spend more time with other cities and venues with respect to both our basketball tournaments and the football championship games in the future," Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said.

Lucas Oil, a retractable-roof stadium, also will host the Super Bowl in February 2012.

Nice pick for the first one. I'm still hoping they rotate it EVERY year.

There are a lot of good stadiums in Big Ten Country

Philly

Pittsburgh

Indianapolis

Cleveland

Chicago

Green Bay

Detroit

Minneapolis

That will make two seasons in a row that Nebraska will have the opportunity to win a conference championship in the same stadium that will host the Super Bowl the same season.

Definitely. Rotation would be key. I think the Big Ten will do it right. I want to laugh at all the Big Texass idiots who go play in Texass's backyard every year and lose...either by not being very good, or having Texass refs make sure it is fixed.

At least if they decide not to rotate it, we won't have to worry about a school being allowed to play in their home state.

Short of Indiana making it to the big game, isn't it cool that we've moved closer to a truly neutral field? Unlike that monopoly Texas got in having the Big XII championship permanently moved to Cowboys Stadium? I love this first pick and it could be moved each year. As someone else said, lots of good stadiums in Big Ten country.

Let's not count our chickens before they hatch...
I agree
didn't see any chicken counting, just said the chance was there. It is a pretty unique situation to be in.
Booked my hotel room.

Too much?

Maybe a tad.

I'm also hoping they rotate the game, like the Big 12 has done. A few of these are out, however. Green Bay is a neat idea, but public transportation is lacking, and housing is an issue. Philly is off by itself, and Pittsburgh is a Big East city. The Metrodome is a dump.

I don't think you could go wrong with a 4 city rotation of Cleveland, Detroit, Indy, and Chicago. 2 outdoor stadiums, and 2 indoor. Some people have opposed the outdoor idea because of how bad the weather could be, but truthfully early December in the Big 10 area isn't that bad. A month later would be a different story. I like the idea of bringing the elements into the equation, but part of that is because I don't see weather hurting us on offense.

Philly is on the very edge if not outside of Big 10 country.

Pittsburgh would be a ? since there is a hometown BSC team there in Pitt.

Cleveland - maybe but seems odd to me.

Minneapolis - only if they get a new stadium - that dome is a dump.

Green Bay - seems out of the way and could that small town host the influx of tourist?

My preference would be a rotation of Indy, Chicago and Detroit with maybe a game in Green Bay on the odd occassion.
