For those that are concerned because the defense gave up 299 yards to Western Kentucky Pelini’s first game of the season history shows us that the total yards gained is almost on pace with the average given up by his defenses. He has been a DC/HC for 8 opening games. In those games his teams have given up a total of 2341 yards or an average of 292.625 per game. At NU alone his defenses have given up 1190 total yards for an average of 297.5 over 4 seasons. Like Bo said if this was game 4 or 5 then there would be cause for alarm but it was game 1 and we still dominated so people need to calm down a little bit.

Going back and watching the game for a second time....sober. I noticed that during the first two quarters that WKU couldnt even sniff a first down. All it came down to was some misalignments and miscommunications between the linebackers, secondary, and tackles. Overall a good defensive performance, but always room for improvement. Looking at Whaleys physical talents, he might just be another Phil Dil for us in the long run when he gets the mental part down pat.

Good find. I mean people have overreacted to the 1st game. It's the 1st time your playing against another team, so it's given you'll have some kinks to get out, seeing how they haven't played since December.

Last year, the defense didn't gel or really play well until the 3 game, when Dillard got back into the good graces of the coaching staff.

We don't have a Dillard this year. :hmmph

Good post. People need to realize that losing Compton and Fisher really hurt us from a mental aspect on D. Our problems boiled down to people being in the wrong assignment, not lining up in time and not everyone being on the same page in the second half. You can't throw all the blame on David or Whaley either, up until Thursday, Compton was going to be in there captaining the D. Two days isn't much time to get a guy prepared to be the play caller on D.

I have a hunch that the improvement from week 1 to week 2 will be dramatic. There will still be mistakes, but there will be less than last week and we'll continue to improve week to week. This D will still be VERY good.

Keying in on the games Pelini actually had control over, I wonder what we should expect to see in game 2 based on what we saw from him defenses in 2003, 2008 and 2009.

2003 - Utah St 238

2008 - @ Wake Forest 373 (arguably Bo's toughest opponent in a game 2)

2009 - Arkansas St 274

So, when you compare game 1 to game 2 in these seasons, it appears we should expect...not much difference in opponents' total yardage. Those 3 game 1s we averaged 297 yards allowed, while the 3 game 2s we averaged giving up 295 yards. In 2003, we gave up 55 more yards in game 2. In 2008, we gave up 23 more yards. And last year, we tightened the reigns giving up 84 less yards than game 1 vs FAU.

Obviously there are many, many other contributing factors to consider, but simply based on this, one would think our defense will improve slightly in the "total yards allowed" category when we face Idaho.

I remember last year thinkin the defense was so so. Then BAM!!! the VTech game hit and those boys played lights out...... I expect similar results this year. We will see some improvement this week(about 280 yards given up),then against UW it will finally come together from them and will leave an imprint of Locker in Husky Stadiums turf.

Remember we gotta give these guys some time to gel and get their chemistry. Our two starting LBs have played 1 game of DI football.
