What we learned in Week 3

Tom Dienhart

Nebraska is the best team in the Big 12. The Huskers were absolutely dominating in a 56-21 victory at Washington, ending any hope Huskies QB Jake Locker had at the Heisman by holding the supposed No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft to 4-of-20 passing for 71 yards and two interceptions. Meanwhile, Nebraska redshirt freshman QB Taylor Martinez looked like a Heisman contender in running for 137 yards and three scores and passing for 150 yards and a touchdown. This last lap around the Big 12 is going to be fun.

More Winners and Losers

Winners

Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez: In his first career road start, Martinez - a redshirt freshman - significantly outplayed Jake Locker while leading Nebraska to a 56-21 rout of Washington. Martinez ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns, and he also threw for 150 yards and a fourth score. Nebraska matched the highest point total ever allowed by Washington at home. "They were asking me [about nervousness] before the game," Martinez told reporters. "I don't get nervous before games, so they should probably stop asking me."

Love this quote. I wasn't really sure about him having ice-water in his veins, as he and other players had been saying, but after the Washington performance I am a believer. Martinez is one cool cat.

God Martinez needs some help with his pressers, he sounds like a 19 year old kid uncomfortable in front of the camera. He says what's on his mind, and that's okay, but someday I could see him getting in trouble because of it.

ahhh you stole my thunder.... yeah this kid is just tooo calm

too early to say if its youth/cockyness/just plain confidence or what

but im leaning to say the kid truly believes and no matter what happens during a game good or bad the kid will never waver.... this of course can be a good thing or also a bad thing... but with 4 years of this guy at the helm (possibly) i cant complain right now....

This was the first game I have seen this year as pay per view is not available here but TM looked/is flaming fast. Each game that goes by he will continue to get better. I am not ready to annoint him as the greatest thing since sliced bread but he has the potential to be an extramly productive GB. By productive I am refering to wins, titles and trophies. It will be a fun ride watching him develope his skills

He sounds like a kid who doesn't like being put in the spot light. Can't say I blame him. I hated doing a book report in front of the class, and most of them were my friends. I know he has to talk to the media, but cut him some slack. I didn't know any body who liked to be the center of attention, unless they were full of themselves. This kid sounds like he is still humble, and excepting what he can do on a football field, with out tooting his own horn. He will get better at being interviewed.

GBR!!!

I agree, but they do need to give him some coaching on answering questions from the press. Yeah, he is a young kid suddenly thrust into the spotlight. He's doing better than I would have at that age. In any event, he should spend 10 or 15 minutes with a press relations person in the ADs office to help him become more comfortable.

This is unbelievable. Everyone is saying how he needs to improve with reporters (and I somewhat agree with this) and there are no complaints about his play on the field. It's a good day to be a Nebraska fan.
