Coaches, players: Martinez has the arm NU's offense needs

I've been hesitant to get on the TM bandwagon. After the UW game I was convinced his running is enough to be the starter, but his throwing motion looked very awkward. His passing numbers were fine at 7/11 and he made some critical 3rd down throws, so I had some hope he'd improve. I just watched the Idaho game from the week before and have to say that he looked more natural throwing the ball in that game. He put some touch on a couple throws and did hit Helu about 20-25 yards down field. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, but between that game and this article, I'm drinking more of the :koolaid2: . I think we'll throw some against KSU, so hopefully we'll see some encouraging results there. And I definitely think we'll need to be balanced against UT's defense; IMO UT will be able to limit or shut down our running game without an effective passing game to go with it.
he can throw some bullets right were he has to, but they are usually on short passes. he goes through his progressions well, but sits in the pocket too long. he can be money on the post route, and with kinnie able to make a move and pick up 15 yard after the catch, that is huge. if he continues to improve his passing, he will be a very dangerous qb. i am still not convinced he can complete the long ball.

The only thing Martinez needs to avoid is the coverage sack like he experienced this last week. If you get sacked within three seconds, it's the line's fault. After three seconds, it's your fault.

I'm not convinced, but he looked better in the Idaho game than the UW game IMO. Better as in his throwing motion and not rocketing every single throw.

i think he is afraid to throw a pick. it will either be a rocket to the wide-out, or so bad that no one is going to catch it.

i completely agree. and with his speed, he should never get sacked. he needs more pocket awareness, he is almost too confident sitting back there.

Martinez may be an accomplished passer and we just haven't seen it yet, but I like this style of offense. I like running a ball right at defenders and then opening things up with the play action pass. I think what we're doing right now offensively is more valuable than being "balanced" and "multiple".

Martinez will have plenty of opportunities this year to air it. Believe me. The Texas defense will be no pushover, and I doubt we gash them for many yards on the ground.
Agreed.

Let's not forget he probably throws the ball twice as much in practice and against, inarguably, the best CB duo in the country. Yeah, he needs work, but we haven't seen any of our real passing game yet due to the blowouts. We are probably a lot further along in the passing attack then what we've seen.

His passing may have looked better against Idaho, but big difference in competition from Idaho to Wash. He seems to be cool under fire. Much more than Cody. I will say I thought bring Cody in that close to or goal line, was a strange time to bring in a player that wasn't warmed up yet. Robinson brought in on a goal line play against Idaho, also results in fumble, yet he hadn't played a down up till then. I guess the coaches want to see how they handle those type of situations, but seems a little unfair, in their timing. I guess everyone will decide after the Texas game. I think T-mart is the best of the three, and just needs a little more work on his passing game. JMHO.

GBR!!!

"I'm telling you, man, this kid is as good a passer as I've ever been around," Watson said
That's some pretty bold talk. I can't wait to see us unleash T-Magic through the air.
Yeah, but as we have seen, this seems like coach speak to me. Lee was supposed to be able to make "all the throws" too. Granted, he was hurt most of last year. I've heard that Taylor has a weak arm, and I've heard that he has a cannon, but until we see it, I will remain at least a little skeptical.

yes, we know more than the coaches and theyre liars.
They did say D. Robinson was tearing it up in practice and was wowing with his running. That hasn't necessarily translated to anything on the field. I understand he hasn't had that much of a chance, but games are different than practice.

I'm still skeptical on his throwing abilities, but I could care less as long as he finds ways to move the ball and score points against all of our Big 12 foes.

I actually am expecting a few long pass plays against SDSU. It's basically a tune-up/practice/exhibition game, and a good time to work on some things without giving things away. I expect to see a lot of posts and a few flys, while still maintaining relatively simple play-calling, ala Sun Belt tour last year.
